Heart Bandit by summer03
Chapter 1 by summer03
It was the spring of 1999 when, Amber decided it was time to hit the road. She loved her family but she wanted more than what she had. Born in a very religious family that never once celebrated her birthday or any holiday for that matter got to her, she was tired of it. She understood why, she knew all the 66 books in the bible like the palm of her hand. She loved and believed in god she did… but she just wanted to taste what was so forbidden in her house.

She wanted to experience a Christmas or for once to celebrate her birthday. She smiled as she finished writing her letter; in it she explained her sudden disappearance. She begged for understanding but very well knew that her father would never understand. He for sure would shun her from her family. But at that point she did not care; she took a deep sigh as she grabbed the key to her liberty.

See for graduation her father had given her a car, a nice Toyota. “You deserve it Ambs you have made us proud,” she remembered her father say. She grabbed her one suitcase and the one thing she could not leave behind her bible. The bible was given to her by her deceased grandmother the one person she had had a connection with.

Once the engine in her car came to life she took one more glance at her home. It was a nice two story home in the suburbs of Dallas. A place that fit her family well, but not her! She had a stab of guilt hit as she remembered her lie, “I can’t today mom,” she remembered telling her as the rest of her family got ready for church.

Never one to get sick her parents believed her and had allowed her to stay home. Little did they know that when they got back home Amber would no longer be there? Slowly she eased out of the parkway and down toward the freeway. Where she was headed she did not know but for sure she was planning to have the experience of her life.

It was a hot spring day in Texas and boy was she glad she was almost out of the state. She looked at the clock on her dashboard and knew that by now her family knew. She could almost imagine and pinpoint her father’s reaction. “She must have had one of them boys in school rotten her mind Adele.” She smiled as she pictured the face her mother would have, probably sobbing still holding the letter she had left.

Hopefully her mother understood her, her father was a lost case. She realized she had not stopped for a bite in long time so she began to look for an exit to a diner or fast food restaurant.

Like all stories Amber was not looking for much but to enjoy life the way she thought it should be. The one thing everyone forgets is that it's not always that way. See Amber was about to be hit with the an amazing experience in life and she was probably not ready for that all.

Amber had finally seen a nice little gasoline station; since she was not too hungry she would just load on junk food and continue her journey wherever that was. She smiled to the old lady at the cash register as she walked in. It was not a busy day, but she assumed that was probably because this was the country side of Texas.

She roamed the isles of the small store grabbing whatever she had never tried before. She smiled as she saw the slurpee machine. She was definitely in need of one of those the heat was horrible at this time of day. “Big definitely big,” she told herself as she grabbed the biggest cup filling it with the white cherry flavored Icee.

So many choices but after enough or she thought she came up to the lady. “Ten on pump number two,” she told the nice lady.

“Long ways to go huh?” the lady asked as she began to charge all the contents on the counter.

“Yeah,” Amber said as she put a strand of her hair behind her ear.

Just then the door bell to the store rang again and in came a young man. Probably in his early mid twenties, Amber couldn’t help but stare the way he dressed was meant to catch attention. She didn’t get a good vibe from him when she saw the way he stared at her; she knew she was blushing.

She heard him clear his throat as he stood behind her. She was glad when she heard the clerk give her the total. “Thanks,” she said politely as she handed the money to the clerk.

She didn't want to any longer in there, she walked out opening the beef jerky. She had always wanted to taste it. One bite and spit it out, yeah she wasn't a beef jerky person. She just concentrated on her Icee, it was doing the trick of cooling her as she waited for the pump to finish.

After making sure she had closed the lid, she jumped into her car and turned it on. As she looked for a good station to listen she was startled by the man in the store. He had jumped into her passenger's seat and pointed a gun at her.

She remembered opening her mouth to scream but one of the man's hand went to her mouth. "Shut up or I'll shoot you! You understand?"

Fearing for her life Amber nodded. "Now go get on the freeway."

Amber did as she was told, feeling her heart stop as she heard the man, “No please,” she said in a whisper as she saw the gun pointing at her.

Amber began to cry and for once wished to be back at home. Was this her punishment? “Quit crying you aren’t dead yet and if you do as I tell you, you won’t die.”

If he was trying to make her feel better it did not work, "Stop! Pull over." Surprised she did as she told him. "Now move to the back seat!"

Her sobs got louder she had seen this in movies. He was going to rape her, "Please just let me go you can keep the car," she said shakily as she did as she climbed to the back.

But as she settled in the back she saw how fast he had gotten to the drivers side, soon he was speeding out of on the freeway. “Please just let me go I promise I won’t say a word of what just happened back there.” Amber pleaded as she held on to her seat.

“Look I am not going to hurt you relax and don’t worry the gun is not even loaded.” He told the very scared young girl. “I wasn’t going to kill anybody. I just wanted to scare you that's all.” He began to laugh a little.

Amber’s mouth was agape as she heard his confession. She suddenly felt mad and without control hit him in the arm hard. “You bastard,” she said anger evident in her voice.

“Ouch, not bad for a prissy girl,” he said his smile widening. “I think it was pretty good for my first kidnapping.” He arched his brow at her.

“Did you just call me prim?” She said offended. “Look just give me my car back and I will drop you off wherever you want. I won’t say a word about anything I promise.”

“I can’t right now I am a fugitive of the law and you are my accomplice,” he said still in mockery. “Yes I called you prissy I mean look at you all dressed in the best and the you way you talk. You probably went to a private school, graduated with honors and all the shit.”

“What and you probably came from a public school maybe even a high school dropout. You probably have no father and you want to be all tough?” she retorted still angry and becoming more annoyed every second.

“You are right never had a father but a mother yes. I did graduate though; I am smart that’s why I was able to pull this off.” He said finally staring at her she was pretty. “Look lets make a deal once we are out of the state of Texas, if you don’t like my company anymore we can separate. I really am not that bad.” He gave her a smile.

“How much longer to Nevada?” she asked finally looking toward him meeting his brown eyes.

“Probably a good day or so. I promise we won’t do anything bad anymore and I will try to be nice.” He gave her a sincere smile, “I’m Alex.”

“Amber,” she said shyly eyeing him suspiciously. “You promise that once in Nevada you will let me go and even after you won’t use that again? She pointed to the gun, we can dispose of it too,” she told him.

“Deal,” he said extending one of his hands toward her while driving with the other.

She stared at him again and then sighed, “God says that even the worst person can change so why not give you the chance. Deal.” She took his hand in hers and then there it was the electric current through her body. She knew then maybe it would be harder than she thought to separate…
