Prologue

Opening the back door to her house, Elizabeth Montgomery entered with her arms full of groceries. It was a hot and humid summer day in Florida. While other people her age were flocking towards the beach, she had been cooped up almost all day in her small air conditioned home office getting a last minute report crunched out on her computer.

The grocery sacks cradled in her arms made it almost impossible for her to see the counter. At her diminutive height of five foot three, she had always struggled against things bigger than her. Even now, at age twenty-one people still called her a living doll. Between her long eyelashes, large blue eyes and adorable button nose she was always the object of some comment, usually given to her by a male.

Her small features blended well with her great figure. She was actually quite voluptuous with a slim, well-toned body. Following her two mile a day jog religiously, she had always looked very athletic.

When she was younger, people used to call her a tomboy. She had always worn her long blonde hair tossed into messy ponytails and permanently resided in well worn blue jeans. Whenever someone started up a ballgame she always managed to get involved.

When Elizabeth finally reached high school she decided to take more care on her appearance. During the summer between eighth and ninth grade, she had virtually transformed into a queen before everyone's very eyes. Before long she had the attention of everyone, including her male teachers.

As she put her bags on the countertop she couldn't help reflecting back just a year and a half earlier. Her first day of college. Back then she had no idea how great an impact walking into one classroom could have on her life.
Chapter 1 by evergreenwriter83
Chapter One

Anderson Community College seemed to explode with energy. After a long summer students were eager to get back and the incoming freshman were filled with their ideals of college life. Dean Williams couldn't help but muse at the expressions on the faces of the students. He could spot a freshman a mile away.

Turning towards the building that housed the musical department, Dean Williams caught a glimpse of a gentlemen hurriedly scooping up a shoulder bag and a pile of papers and books. His eyes lit up with relief.

"Mr. Dorough, I was worried that you wouldn't arrive in time for the first day." the Dean said, extending his hand as he walked towards the young man balancing his supplies.

"I always keep my promises Dean Williams." Howard Dorough said shaking the Dean's hand.

"Let me show you to your classroom." the Dean said as he led Mr. Dorough down the gleaming white hallways.

If there was one thing that the Dean enjoyed the most it was the music department at his institution. Even without students in the building, the Dean could almost hear the joyous voices resounding in the walls.

"Here we are." he said leading Mr. Dorough into a large room with acoustic walls.

"Excellent." Howard Dorough said, setting his stuff on the oak desk in the front of the room.

"If you need anything else just ask Mr. Dorough." Dean Williams said, glancing around.

"Just one thing." the handsome young man said, putting his hands on the desk and leaning over towards the Dean.

"Anything."

"Call me Howie."

"Of course. Have a great first day, Howie. You have no idea how we appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to teach for the semester."

"Well who knows? I may be able to scout out some rising talent." Howie said with a soft laugh as he straightened his papers."

"If there's one thing our musical department has, it's talent." the Dean assured him.

"I'm sure I will see that for myself very soon." Howie said with a grin as he turned towards the dry erase board.

"Yes you will. Have a great day." the Dean said again, walking out of the room.

* * *

Oh my god, what am I doing here? I'm not a teacher. I'm a singer. What the hell am I going to do with all these kids?

Howie replayed his fears through his mind as he gazed out at the almost packed room. Why did I ever agree to do this?

When Howie had first received the call from Dean Williams, he had thought the idea was a complete joke. Thinking back he could remember the conversation vividly.

"Hello?" Howie had said.

"Mr. Dorough?" the sound of an unfamiliar voice had said.

"This is he." Howie replied.

"This is Dean Williams from Anderson Community College."

"Oh hello Dean Williams. What can I help you with today?"

"I wanted to tell you that we are short on a vocal teacher this year and we could use someone that not only knows vocals but is almost deeply involved with the business that so many of our music majors are interested in diving into."

"Well I can see if there's anyone in the studios around here that has some free time." Howie had said, still wondering why Dean Williams had called him of all people.

"Actually..." the Dean had said before pausing. Howie clutched the phone, twirling a pencil around in his fingers as he waiting for the Dean to continue. "We were hoping that you might agree to take the job. That is if you aren't busy for a semester."

"Me?" Howie had said, scoffing.

"That was our hope." the Dean had told him.

Surprisingly the Dean's hope had become a reality. Upon meeting with Dean Williams, Howie had become engrossed in something new to do with his life. Not only would he be able to teach, but he would also be able to write and record some music for the album that he and the Boys were working on.

And now here Howie stood in the front of the classroom, staring at each new student arriving. Some of the females just arriving to class had recognized him instantly and there were long periods of squeals before composure was regained.

And then, as if drawn towards the door by magnetism, Howie's eyes fell upon the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.
Chapter 2 by evergreenwriter83
Chapter Two

The first words that came to him were living doll. She was small in height but her figure made up for it. Her long blonde hair fell sensuously down and around her shoulders. She was wearing a tight t-shirt that accentuated her great figure. The shirt came up just enough to show her well toned stomach. Her faded blue jeans molded her hips and ended with flare legs.

For a few seconds Howie didn't even realize that it was five minutes past the time the class was supposed to start. Finally his thoughts were broken by a student’s voice.

"Are we going to start soon?" a scratchy voice towards the front of the room called out.

"Y-yes. Of course." Howie said clearing his throat. He saw the beautiful girl take an empty seat towards the middle of the room.

By going down the list of names to mark attendance, Howie found out that Elizabeth Montgomery was the girl that had already become the object of his eye.

"All right now that I have everyone marked I would like to go over my syllabus. Next class I will start listening to everyone individually to correctly mark your vocal ranges and assign you to a particular section. So if everyone can pick up the paper that is already on your desk..."

Picking up the paper slowly, Elizabeth quickly scanned the objectives of the class. While music was her first love, her parents insisted that she make business her major. Music had always soothed and consoled Elizabeth through some tough times in her life. It also carried her on a cloud during her happiest times.

Her mother had always downplayed her talent. After one elementary school recital her mother had come over, given her a quick hug and said softly, "Beth, you were great! But then again everyone was great. Not everyone can be a superstar."

Elizabeth knew that she couldn't really blame her parents. They just didn't want to get her hopes up. Yet, she knew in her heart that if she put all her determination into it that she could become someone.

Turning her attention back to the instructor, Elizabeth couldn't help but drink him in slowly. She had to admit that he was extremely sexy. While all of the other girls were squealing, Beth had made a point of staying out in the hall to read the background information on Howard Dorough.

While she had heard of the music, she wasn't anywhere close to being a teeny-bopper. She couldn't imagine fainting at the sight of a person. Even superstars could cry and bleed. They were only human. Weren't they?

But she did have to admit that the superstar standing at the front of the room was delicious eye candy. Having dated quite a few men already in her life, Elizabeth could tell a good looking man even with all the clothes that her instructor was wearing.

Howie, as he chose to be called, was dressed in a stylish pair of khakis that were neither too loose nor too tight. A black polo shirt rested comfortably over a body that Beth could tell was quite muscular and well toned. His hair wasn't as long as it had been in some of the magazines that Beth had actually seen. It was just below his ears and curled wildly making her want to tangle her hands into it even more.

Realizing that she was staring a little too intently, a soft blush crept into her cheeks and she quickly looked back down at the syllabus.

* * *

"So as I said at the beginning of the class, we will begin the vocal testing the next time we meet." Howie said. He set the paper he clutched tightly in his hands back down on his desk.

During the whole class it had taken all of the effort that he had within himself not to constantly stare over at Elizabeth Montgomery. At one point he knew that he had been studying her intently as she ran her tongue across her lips.

"Does anyone have any questions?" he said, trying to break his thoughts from the image of her tongue.

"Should we prepare some music for the testing? From which end of the alphabet are you going to start?" Norman Essleton, who owned the scratchy voice from earlier, asked.

"Don't prepare any music. I want to hear how you sound with an unfamiliar piece of music. And um..." Howie said biting his lip as he looked at the list of names. "We'll start in the middle. With the M's."

As soon as he said it he knew that he may have made his first big mistake. If anything he should have took A-M the first day so that he could end with her lesson. Now with her being practically the first vocal test he administered his mind would be on her the whole class. But it was already too late. Many of the students had already packed up quickly and left.

"See you next class." Howie said, surprised at the cracking of his voice.

Elizabeth Montgomery slowly rose, slinging her bag across her shoulder. Before leaving she turned around quickly to get one more glimpse of her enticing new vocal teacher.

She was surprised to find that he was staring right back at her. Giving a warm smile she walked slowly out, stepping in time with the beating of her own heart.

Chapter Three

Two days later, Elizabeth walked back towards the music building to attend her vocal class. Her stomach felt like she had a steel vice squeezing it tightly.

i>Oh my god. I'm first. How can I be first? What if he tells me I have no talent? What if I can't carry a tune? What if I don't know the right emotions to put into the music that he picks? What if when I open my mouth nothing comes out but a gargle?

The what if's were staggering. Slowly she headed inside the classroom. Almost everyone else was already there.

This is no time to get nervous Elizabeth Montgomery. Taking a deep breath, she took her seat and waiting for Howie to raise his head to acknowledge the start of class.

He knew that he couldn't avoid his class forever. Even without looking up he could sense that she was in the room. His stomach felt as tight as a steel vice. Finally he slowly raised his eyes to meet that of his class. Clearing his throat and refusing to look directly at her he began to speak.

"Welcome back. I'm glad to see I didn't scare too many people away." he said with a weak attempt to make a joke. Some of the squealing girls from the previous class laughed loudly in response.

"As I said before I will be starting with the M's today and working towards the end of the alphabet. Next class I will do A through L. Anyone with a last name in the A through L category is free to go. I won't need you today."

Dammit Dorough. Stop your voice from shaking. What kind of authority figure are you?

"Let's see...first on the list is Elizabeth Montgomery."

The moment he said her name her heart stopped. It seemed to her that everyone's eyes were directed to her. With what felt like lead weights attached to her ankles she slowly rose and made her way towards the front of the room.

"Each student will get a private testing. There will be time enough for solos in front of the group." Howie said, seemingly direct to her rather than to the other waiting students.

Elizabeth followed Howie through a door into a room that was built to have the same great acoustics as their larger classroom. A small piano with sheet music was already positioned in the corner.

"Today..." he said slowly walking towards the piano and shifting through sheet music. "I'd like you to sing this."

Beth took the sheets from his hands. Her fingertips barely brushed against his bare hand but they both simultaneously jumped. Refusing to look at each other, Howie quickly sat down at the piano as Elizabeth glazed furtively through the music that she was presented with.

"I'd like you to go through the whole thing. Don't worry about mistakes." Howie finally said, getting up the courage to look at her.

He couldn't help but think about how beautiful she was. Even though her eyes were still downcast he could sense her nervousness by the way that she held herself. Her silence only made her that much more appealing to him.

She's your student Dorough. Get on with the music test.

Elizabeth heard him start the intro. It was now or never. If she was ever going to make it into music she would have to put her fear behind her. It was all up to her now.

When it was time for her to sing all her inhibitions melted away. The music seemed to carry her. Even though she was not into country music, this song had always appealed to her.

From this moment my life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on

From this moment I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love I'd give my last breath
From this moment on

Howie was shocked. Even though his fingers were still playing he couldn't think of anything else but her voice. Her voice compelled beauty. Every bit of emotion seemed to be poured into the song from her small body. He couldn't help but be transfixed on every facial expression, every turn of her lips as her voice rose and fell with the notes and melody of the song. Before he knew it he was singing along. There voices blended and entwined together like beautiful love making.

From this moment as long as I live
I will love you I'll promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment on

You're the reason I believe in love
You're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just to love
My dreams came true because of you

By the time Beth hit the last note she was completely exhausted. Leaning against the piano she looked over at Howie. The minute her eyes met his she felt the electricity. The moment he had joined in with her she had gotten the feeling that she was being lifted up by their emotional melodic harmony. As she thought about it a blush crept up her neck. It had felt like such an intimate moment.

Or maybe it was just the fact that she wanted it to have been an intimate moment. For both of them.

Chapter Four

"Ms. Montgomery? Can you wait a moment?" Howie said. He knew he couldn't stop his mouth from saying those words. They had been on the tip of his tongue since she had begun to pack up her things.

"Sure." she said softly turning around. Is he going to say I had no right to be in his class? Was I that bad?

"Have a seat." he said, nodding at the chair he had slid next to his desk. Beth walked over quickly, sat down and stared expectantly into his eyes. His beautiful brown eyes.

"I wasn't expecting the high level of talent that I found here today." he said, dropping his gaze to his desk quickly. Elizabeth watched his every moment. Why won't he keep eye contact?

"But I must say that you are by far the rarest gem that I have encountered so far in this class. And just between the two of us..." he paused as he leaned towards her. Her heart seemed to leap right into her throat. "I doubt that any of the others will be as good."

"Mr. Dorough, I---" she began to say.

"Howie." he replied as an impish smile spread across his exquisite face.

"Howie, that's a great compliment but I doubt that I can be that good. I've never had any formal training besides the choirs I've belonged to and--" out of breath, she leaned back and let the words sink into her mind.

"I understand that. But if I think your voice is magnificent now think about what this vocal class and other vocal training will do for you?" he said.

“I’m not taking any other vocal training besides what I'm getting in this class." she pointed out.

Howie paused. Should I suggest it? She might slap me. But then again if she says yes...

"What if you studied with me separately? Free of charge of course. We can strengthen your vocal muscles and I can show you around the studios. You can see the real deal close up and in action."

It sounded too good to be true. Listening to him she couldn't help thinking there might be another reason he was so willing to help her. It brought out the little voice inside her. Beth, would you really mind if he was offering to help you for a little something more? I know you would enjoy it.

"Is that a no?" he said, breaking into her thoughts. She hadn't even realized that she was shaking her head no.

"What? Oh no!" she said as her eyes widened. "Actually, I'd love that. Thank you so much."

"Excellent." he said, leaning back in his chair. Silence filled the room.

"Should we schedule it the days this class doesn't meet? That way I could have training almost all week."

"That would be great."

"Okay. Um, so if that's all..." Elizabeth said trailing off. Nervously she wound the strap of her purse around her fingers.

"Yes that's all." Howie said, finally leaning towards her. Elizabeth couldn't help but catch a whiff of his cologne. He smelled wonderful.

"All right, I'll see you later then." she said with surprising calm. Grabbing her stuff she offered him a bright smile before walking out.

Chapter Five

I don't like the way he's talking to her. What's so special about her? Is it because she's blonde? What a whore.

Helen Kendle stood in the shadows of the choir room watching the love of her life talking with Elizabeth Montgomery. The closeness between the two of them fueled a rage within her.

Pressing herself against the wall, Helen stayed in the shadows as Elizabeth exited the classroom. Slowly she turned to gaze at Howie. He was still staring out the door. Even from where she was standing she could see a hint of passion bubbling behind his chocolaty eyes.

He'll realize soon that she's nothing. She can't even sing. I'm the one he wants.

She watched as he lowered his eyes back down to his desk and began to pack his things. Without a sound she slipped out of the room.

Since the tender age of thirteen she had adored Howard Dwayne Dorough. Every spare inch of wall space in her room was covered with pictures of him. And when she had learned that he was teaching a class at Anderson Community College she had immediately enrolled, even though she didn't really have a choice between colleges.

He was more gorgeous in person that she had even dreamed. The sight of him wearing khakis that first class had almost sent her body into seizures. When he called her name she was almost positive that he spoke it with more passion than anyone else’s. Except Elizabeth Montgomery.

Elizabeth Montgomery had become an instant enemy in her eyes. The way she flaunted herself made Helen sick. Instantly she could see that the only thing Elizabeth wanted was a romp with her famous new music instructor. That bitch.

Walking briskly along the path leading to the administration buildings, she quickly stopped when she heard a voice directly behind her. "Hello. You're in my vocal class right? Isn't your name Helen?" The soft voice was sweet but Helen knew different. The voice belonged to the snake.

Slowly turning around Helen came face to face with Elizabeth Montgomery.

Everyone knew who Helen Kendle was. As the stepdaughter of Dean Williams, everyone wanted to make sure to get on her good side as quickly as possible.

"Yeah that's my name. What do you want?" she snapped at Elizabeth. Her face seemed to contort into disgust within seconds. Elizabeth stepped back surprised. What did I do to her? I don't even know her!

"I just wanted to say that I hope that we can get to talk more. It's obvious you like music." Elizabeth said cautiously studying Helen.

It wasn't that Helen was ugly. She wasn't. She was at least five foot six. Her dark brown hair was pulled up tightly into a ponytail. Her silver rimmed glasses seemed to be glued to her semi-bloated face.

She could be extremely pretty if she lost a few pounds.

"Of course I like music. But I don't have time to talk now. I have to go see my stepfather." Helen said with a tone of impatience. She stressed the word stepfather. "He's the Dean here you know."

"Oh, yes of course. He seems very nice." Elizabeth said as her mouth turned up into a pleasant smile.

"Try living with him." Helen answered shortly. Without another word she turned around and marched quickly away.

With a pounding heart Elizabeth walked towards her car. The events that had occurred already in these first few days of school had already exhausted her. And now I've somehow gotten on the Dean's stepdaughter's bad side. I could very well be screwed.

But then again Howard Dorough had told her that she could sing. He wanted to give her lessons. She could be a star. And she could have a hot steamy romance with a certain Latino pop star.

"Beth, don't be stupid." she whispered to herself as she started her car. "He's not interested in you like that. And you're not interested in him like that." Or are you?
Chapter 6 by evergreenwriter83
Chapter Six

Nobody nobody wants to be lonely
Nobody wants to cry
My body's longing to hold you
So bad it hurts inside

Time is precious and it's slipping away
And I've been waiting for you all of my life
Nobody wants to be lonely
So why don't you let me love you?

Their voices floated out the open window, over the balcony and towards the ocean to mix with the sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks. Over the past three months Elizabeth and Howie had been meeting at his house to practice on her voice. The music impacted them so hard that by the time it was all over their vocal muscles were sore and they were both dampened by perspiration.

But, one thing that they had come to realize was how beautiful their voices sounded together. Apart they were great. Together they were magical.

Howie couldn't help but gaze up at Beth. She was sitting on the piano gazing down at him singing as his fingers ran over the keys and his voice entwined with hers.

God, she's so beautiful.

Elizabeth looked down at Howie. Leaning over a little closer she inhaled the scent of his cologne. With every visit she seemed to become more and more attracted to him. Tonight the feelings were overpowering.

Beth, it's just the song.

Can you hear my voice
Do you hear my soul
It's a serenade
So your heart is finally whole

And suddenly you’re flying down the stairs
Into my arms baby

Slowly, Elizabeth reached out and touched his face. How soft it felt beneath her fingertips. Without consciousness her hands reached up and into his mess of brown curls.

How soft it feels.

Howie couldn't help but close his eyes. Her touch felt so good. He knew it was against the rules. But right now he didn't care. Without a pause the music continued and his voice came out of his mouth strong and clear.

Before I start going crazy
Run to me cause I'm dying

With agonizing slowness, Howie opened his eyes and gazed up into her face. Slowly taking his hands off the keys he placed his palms on the sides of her face. Leaning up he let his lips brush against hers. She eagerly responded with an equally soft kiss.

All of the pent up sexual tension finally released itself like water breaking through a flood gate. Without apprehension he kissed her again, this time with an increasing urgency. Her hands entangled themselves with even more intensity into his hair. With every passing second she inched closer to him until she was seated onto his lap. Her body brushed against the keys on the way down producing a melody of unrelated notes.

Howie refused to think of the implications. Of course he knew she was a student. It was against the rules. He wasn't exactly prepared for a relationship at the moment either nor was he what anyone would consider spontaneous.

I'm only going to live once.

Elizabeth broke free of their kiss. Slowly she trailed her lips down to his neck. Her mind swam. She barely felt his arms cradle her as he stood up and began to walk through the living room into his spacious bedroom. The last thing that passed through her mind was that there was no turning back.

Not that I really care.

Chapter Seven

Perched between two boulders on the rocky shore, Helen looked through her binoculars towards the house that was home to her future husband, Howard Dorough. She had seen Elizabeth enter. In fact she had seen Elizabeth in his house every other day for the past two months.

I'll kill her if she seduces him. He's mine.

With each passing day she had seen the closeness that was forming between the two. The rumor around the class was that Beth was sleeping with Howie for solos and the seemingly impossible A. Each remark that floated by Helen's ears only turned her eyes more sinister.

That was why two months ago she had decided to watch Howie's house when Elizabeth stopped over. The sounds of their duets still played through Helen's ears as she stood watching the two leaning towards each other closer and closer. Her fingers grasped the binoculars tighter, her knuckles becoming whiter than a ghost.

And then she saw it. It was something she had been dreading since she had heard Howie ask Elizabeth to stay after class to talk to her.

She's kissing him. How could she do that to him? It's assault!

Deep within her mind a soft voice bubbled to the surface. He's kissing back. He wants her. He doesn't want you. Look at him groping her.

"No!" she screamed, dropping the binoculars and clutching her head in a desperate attempt to drown the reason out of her mind.

He's mine. He's all mine. I'll do whatever it takes.

* * *

Hours later Howie stared down at Elizabeth's face in wonderment. Had it really happened? The past few hours seemed like a dream to him. But she was really in his arms, curled up to him, her skin brushing against his.

I should feel guilty.

"No." he whispered softly. "Something so right couldn't be wrong." Gingerly he twirled a piece of her blonde hair around his finger mindlessly.

She looks so pretty asleep.

Feeling a sudden shiver, Elizabeth snuggled up to the hard yet warm man holding her in his arms. With fluttering eyes Howie's image greeted her eyes. It was a welcomed sight.

"Are you awake already?" he asked softly with a gorgeous smile playing on his lips.

"Why should I sleep when I can look at you?" Beth said as she sat up slowly, letting the covers fall from her grasp.

"It can't happen again." he said softly.

Widening her blue eyes she looked into his face incredulously.

"Why not?" she asked, trying to control the sound of her voice. Nervously she wet her lips with her tongue.

"I don't mean ever again. I just mean for this semester. I..." he trailed off staring into her already tearing blue eyes.

God, she probably thinks she's a one night stand.

"It's against the rules?" she asked softly, trying to pull herself away from his electrifying, yet concerned, eyes.

"A teacher can't date a student. We only have two more months."

"Only?" she said with a laugh.

"It does seem like forever. It's like I've had a taste of heaven but I have to wait in purgatory until I'm fully allowed in." he whispered, playing with a string on the sheets. She stared at him surprised.

What a weird comparison.

"It's going to be hard. But we can still see each other in class. And we can still have our lessons."

"Well, actually..." he trailed off, clearing his throat.

"Oh, I see." Beth whispered, taking her gaze off him to look out the window towards the spectacular oceanic view.

"Having you here practicing would be too great a temptation. Not that I don't love the temptation but..."

Looking back at him, Elizabeth could see that he was speaking the truth. Pushing the thought that the moment could have only been a one night stand to him, she reached out and kissed him softly.

"I understand." she said after their lips parted. Her face broke into an angelic smile as she rested her head on his chest tonight.

"Stay here tonight." he whispered, pulling her closer. "I just want a few more hours before we have to go back to our student/teacher relationship."

"Gladly." she responded, planting a soft kiss on his powerful chest.

Chapter Eight

I wanna be bad
You make that look so good
I've got things on my mind
I never thought I would

I wanna be bad
You make that feel so good
I'm losing all my cool
I'm about to break the rules
I wanna be bad

Helen sang at the top of her lungs as she pulled her purple Mustang into the college parking lot. With a smug smile she headed towards the administration building. She had to have a very important talk with her stepfather, Dean Williams.

Even as busy as he was, the Dean held a constant smile. The school year was shaping up beautifully. The staff and students were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first music festival of the year. With Howie Dorough as part of the faculty, tickets had never sold faster.

Interrupting his pleasant thoughts was the voice of Ms. Petersen, his secretary. Her voice rang out clearly from the intercom. "Your stepdaughter, Helen, is here to see you Dean Williams."

"Oh, yes of course. Send her in." he said cheerfully, reclining in his office chair.

Dean Williams couldn't help but think back to the day that he had met Helen's mother, Ashley. She had been a wealthy, single woman attached to the arm of one of his colleagues. It had been love at first sight.

Of course Helen had always made a point to cause trouble. Her school records were horrible. Both the Dean and Ashley had realized that the only college that Helen would ever be accepted into was Anderson Community College and only because of the Dean's authority.

Maybe she's ready to grow up and accept me.

"Hello Bill." Helen said tersely, taking a seat in one of the plush leather chairs across from his desk.

"Helen! It's so nice to see you." Dean Williams said was a bright smile.

Dammit. I just want to wipe that smile right off that face.

"What brings you to my little office?"

"I've come to talk to you about Elizabeth Montgomery." she said stretching out like a panther.

"Elizabeth Montgomery?"

"Yes." Helen said through gritted teeth. "She's in my vocal class. Howie Dorough is the instructor."

"Oh now I recognize the name. She has one of the solo spots for the upcoming music festival."

Trying to keep her temper, Helen’s eyes squinted as she clutched the arms of her chair a little tighter.

"My peers and I have a few suspicions about her." she said trying to sound casual. She couldn't let her hatred show.

"Suspicions? Like what? Is she like that French Vanilla Ice? Is she lip-synching her way to the top?"

Get out of the 80's Bill.

"No." she said, forcing a fake laugh. "We believe that she may be influencing the teacher by other means than vocally."

"What are you implying Helen?" the Dean said, slowly loosing his smile.

"We believe that Elizabeth Montgomery may be giving sexual favors to Mr. Dorough to get ahead."

"Helen do you know how serious this implication is? If it isn't true it could seriously embarrass not only the student but also that of a man who is doing us a great favor by teaching here."

"But daddy..." Helen started. She had never called him daddy before. "It's not only me. Almost the whole class believes it."

"Rumors don't stop after you graduate high school. There are just as many if not more drifting along college campuses." the Dean pointed out gently. He couldn't help but smile as he said it.

She called me daddy.

"That's not the only reason why I believe it's true. I was...I was walking along the beach last night and happened to past Professor Dorough's house. It just so happens that Elizabeth Montgomery was there." she said. Her voice dripped off deadly sweetness.

"She was? Well then..." Dean Williams paused as he thought about it. "I'll look into Helen. Thank you." he added softly.

Planting a kiss on his cheek, Helen turned around and walked out. The minute she slid into her car her face brightened with a triumphant smile.

"Bye bye Elizabeth Montgomery."

Hello Howie Dorough.

Chapter Nine

Elizabeth Montgomery walked towards the administration building slowly. Her heart was pounding. She had been called out of her business class to meet with the Dean. Whenever Elizabeth had been called to the principal's office during her high school days the first thing that she had always thought was, Oh my god I must have done something wrong. Today was no different.

The moment she walked through the doors into the outer office of Dean William's office she was filled with trepidation. Through the frosted glass window she could see that the Dean was already talking with Howie.

How does he know? Or does he?

"Please have a seat." the receptionist said. She motioned towards the soft padded chairs lined up against the wall.

With a slight nod Beth sunk into a chair, wondering what was already happening between the Dean and Howie within the office.

"I want you to understand that these types of confrontations are uncomfortable for me. I have the up most respect for all of the outstanding people that teach here. I hope that what we are going to discuss is purely rumor." the Dean said softly, studying Howard Dorough's face.

"What is it that you want to talk about Dean?" Howie said. He had a sinking feeling that he already knew what the topic of conversation would be.

"I've received a concern about the conduct of a Miss Elizabeth Montgomery."

"The conduct of..."

"I should say inappropriate conduct."

"I don't think I understand."

"The unnamed party has expressed a concern that you and Miss Montgomery have become romantically involved which they believe is affecting your judgment on who should receive top billing in the class and in any of the festivals." Dean Williams said. Howie could tell that he was uncomfortable.

The silence that filled the room was stifling. Howie could feel the heat rising up his neck and slowly spreading through his face. Choosing his words carefully, Howie began to speak.

"You have been so kind to me Dean Williams that I don't intend to lie to you. It is true that Elizabeth Montgomery and I have become romantically involved." Before the Dean could respond Howie continued. "But I want you to keep in mind when deciding a proper punishment that I was the person responsible for the initial start of the relationship. I urge you not to blame Elizabeth Montgomery. She is truly a talent and I am not just saying that because of … er, other circumstances."

Dean Williams couldn't help but be impressed by the honesty that Howie brought forth. His face softened and he spoke with deep regret.

"I do want to thank you for accepting my offer to teach here Mr. Dorough. You are a very qualified and talented young man that our students here could have truly benefited from. But under the circumstances I will be forced to ask you to resign your position at our facility."

"I completely understand Dean Williams. I'll clean out my desk today." Howie said, shaking the Dean's hand and walking towards the door. Before opening it, he turned once more and looked at the Dean already hovering over some paperwork.

"There's just one more thing Dean Williams."

"What is it Mr. Dorough?"

"What about Elizabeth Montgomery?"

"Since you are willing to accept total blame there will be no repercussions as far as she's concerned, but I will make a note in her transcript just as a reminder to myself to keep my eyes open."

"Thank you Dean." Howie said, walking out into the outer office. Instantly he was staring into the eyes of Elizabeth. She looked so small sitting in the office chair, staring up at him with her big blue eyes.

With a small smile but without saying a word, Howie walked out of the outer office and closed the door behind him.

Dean Williams’s voice came through over the intercom.

"Ms. Petersen can you tell Ms. Montgomery that I do not need to speak to her after all?"

"Yes Dean Williams." Ms. Petersen answered. Elizabeth had already heard.

As fast as her feet could carry her, she was out the door. She had only one thing on her mind.

Finding Howie.

Chapter Ten

"Howie!" Elizabeth's voice called from behind. He was just finishing loading his things into the back of his purple Corvette.

"Elizabeth." his smile spread slowly as he opened his arms to hug her.

"What happened in there?"

Quickly he told her an abbreviated version of the conversation that had taken place between the two men. As he elaborated her eyes grew dark. She seemed to instantly read between the lines.

"You placed all the blame on yourself didn't you?" she asked, placing her hands on her slender hips.

"That class would be insignificant without you. Besides, I have so many other projects right now that stepping down from this job early is probably a mixed blessing."

"But I'm responsible too."

"You need this college education." Howie said, staring down at her. His face was filled with determination. She would never win the argument.

"What about us?" she responded, running a hand through his hair.

"We don't have to wait to be together." he replied, leaning down to kiss her softly on the lips. The gesture brought a bright smile to her face.

"We'll still continue our lessons. Come over tomorrow night."

He squeezed her hand and gave her another kiss before he got into her car. Elizabeth watched it drive away from the college before turning away.

Howie my love, you could be right. This might truly be a mixed blessing.

* * *

The next day Helen walked into vocal class with a grin that rivaled that of a Cheshire cat. She had won. Even though Dean Williams hadn't told her directly, she knew by his demeanor at the dinner table the night before that he had been forced to withdraw a student from the university. His facial expressions had said it all.

Taking her usual seat, Helen glanced at the desk. Usually Howie was there before the first student walked into the room.

Where was he?

Feeling a presence entering the room, Helen slowly swung her eyes towards the doorway. Her heart stopped. Elizabeth Montgomery headed towards her seat like nothing was wrong. Heat quickly rose to Helen's cheeks.

What the hell is she still doing in school?

"Good morning ladies and gentlemen." a thunderous voice boomed from the back of the room. Turning her head, Helen saw a balding middle aged man waddling towards the desk in the front of the room. Her mind swam with wonderment.

"Under circumstances under his control Mr. Dorough is no longer able to be your instructor. I'd like to introduce myself. I am..."

On and on he drowned as Helen brooded. Her stepfather had fired Howie. He hadn't gotten rid of Elizabeth.

Does it really surprise you Helen? He's never done anything to make you happy. He's made your life a living hell. Of course he would get rid of Howie. He knew how much Howie adored you. He kept Elizabeth in the class to taunt you. She gets to taunt you with the fact that she seduced the love of your life.

Helen took a deep breath and pressed her back into her chair. Her fingers griped her number two pencil angrily. She could almost feel her face contorting.

You won't get away with this Elizabeth Montgomery. You may have won Round One but Round Two has just begun.

Chapter Eleven

Two weeks later, the auditorium was filled to capacity. The first musical festival of the year was about to begin. Dean Williams stood by nervously watching as more and more people flocked in. He knew why they were all here. They wanted to see Howie Dorough.

But I fired him.

After the last seat had been taken, Dean Williams made his way up to the stage slowly. Turning, he met hundreds of anxious eyes.

"I would like to thank everyone for coming to tonight's festival. We have for you the best of our theatrical, vocal and musical students to perform tonight." the Dean paused.

Should I tell them?

"Before the show starts I would like to introduce our musical and theatrical professors. They are truly the masterminds that made this program possible."

The applause was thunderous. As the Dean called out the teachers one by one he could tell that the applause was becoming more thunderous.

They think I'm saving him for last.

"And finally I would like to introduce our new vocal instructor, Professor Nordstrom."

The room went silent. The air was stifling. Finally someone shouted, "I want my fucking money back!"

That one comment rolled into hundreds of simultaneous and similar complaints. The stream of people getting up was unnerving.

Our performers are going to be crushed.

Elizabeth heard the noise from the wings where she stood. Even from this distance she could see the distress written across the Dean's face. She had to do something.

Elizabeth what can you do? Your feet are stuck to the floor. Your palms are dripping with sweat. There's no way you could have gone out there even if people had decided not to complain. You're scared!

"Come on." a voice whispered into her ear. Elizabeth turned around quickly. Howie stood there gazing down at her, a soft smile spreading across his face.

"Wha--" Elizabeth said. She was cut off by the music that started to play out through the speakers into the audience.

"We're singing." he said, walking back over to her. With soft fingers he slowly zipped up her dark purple dress. It wasn't until that moment that she saw he was dressed in a tux. It made him even more appealing.

How can I sing? My tongue's glued to the roof of my mouth.

Before she could protest, Howie gently walked her out onto the stage and took his seat at the piano. Scenes of their practices at his house replaced the sight of the large and loud audience in Elizabeth's mind.

Howie could sense her nervousness. Before he had even thought of the consequences, he knew that he had to go to the festival. She was too talented to be spooked by stage fright. With squealing tires, he had made a fast u-turn in a busy intersection, drove home, changed clothes, and sped towards Anderson Community College without another thought.

And now he was sitting at the piano. Elizabeth leaned on it, her eyes never leaving his face. Slowly he started to play and sing.

Over and over I look in your eyes
You are all I desire
You have captured me

I want to hold you
I want to be close to you
I never want to let go

Listening to his voice, Elizabeth felt the courage to open her mouth. The harmony flowed out into the now silent audience.

I wish that this night would never end
I need to know

Staring into each other's eyes they both began to sing. With each word their voices grew stronger, wrapping around each other like their powerful lovemaking.

Could I hold you for a lifetime?
Could I look into your eyes?
Could I have this night to share this night together?
Could I hold you close beside me?
Could I hold you for all time?
Could I have this kiss forever?

The courage building inside of her, Elizabeth slid onto the piano, leaning closer to Howie. With him as her pillar of strength, she felt the courage to bare her soul to the audience through the music.

Over and over I dreamed of this night
Now you're here by my side you are next to me
I want to hold you and touch you and taste you
And make you want nobody but me

Together they flew through the song, sometimes singing to each other, sometimes joining as one voice to express the power of their extreme passion. The audience was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.

Watching this complete display of passion, Dean Williams felt like he was intruding on a private moment. Yet, he couldn't take his eyes away. Together they held a magical spark that instantly enraptured people.

They had saved the show.

Chapter Twelve

Backstage Helen watched with an ever increasing anger. The end of the duet was coming up. Elizabeth was sprawled across the piano sexily, leaning towards Howie. At any moment it looked like they would wrap themselves into a searing kiss.

With narrowing eyes and clenched teeth Helen wove her way deeper backstage. Directly in front of her was a ladder. She knew exactly where it led. Being careful not to snag her dress on one of the protruding nails she began the climb.

Howie knew the end of the song was near. Leaning closer towards Elizabeth, Howie shut his eyes. He couldn't think of a better way to end such a passionate song but with a kiss.

Suddenly the sound of a fast approaching object met his ears. His eyes flew open only to see a heavy sandbag fall from the ceiling. It crashed through the piano missing Elizabeth by mere inches.

Elizabeth couldn't believe it. If she had been a few inches over the sandbag could have very well killed her. As soon as the realization sunk into her brain she felt the room spin. All went black.

* * *

"Beth? Can you hear me?" Howie said with a voice filled with panic. Her hand felt cold and clammy.

With fluttering eyelids, Beth slowly looked around. It took a few seconds before everything blended into solid shapes. Where am I?

"What happened? I---" she whispered. Her throat felt like sandpaper.

"They think one of the stagehands accidentally loosened one of the sandbags. It crashed into the piano. You've had quite a scare." Howie said, rubbing his hand reassuringly up and down her arm.

"Did everyone leave?" she asked with a groan as she slowly sat up.

"No. Actually the show's still going on. You know the saying. The show must go on." Howie said, kissing her softly. It brought a smile to her still trembling lips.

"Elizabeth! I'm so glad your okay!"

Turning, Beth saw Dean Williams rushing towards her. The worried, yet happy, expression on his face put her at ease.

"The show's going great. But the audience wants to give you a much deserved round of applause."

"Shall we?" Howie asked her, standing up and extending his hand.

"Of course. We can't disappoint our public." Elizabeth said laughing as she took his hand.

As soon as the crowd saw Howie and Elizabeth emerged they were on their feet with thunderous applause. It seemed from every direction that flowers were thrown. It took Beth's breath away.

Maybe I really can make a career of singing. With Howie's help I can do anything, she thought, snuggling closer towards him. The smile never left her face.

You won't be smiling for long bitch, Helen thought as she stood at the back of the auditorium. Her arms crossed in defiance as she turned and marched out of the building.

"I can't put my finger on it Howie. I just feel like I'm being followed." Elizabeth said, setting her coffee cup down on his kitchen table slowly.

It had been two months since the incident at the musical festival and since that day Beth had become more and more suspicious of almost everything around her. The only one that seemed to take her concerns seriously was Howie.

"Maybe we should go to the police." he suggested softly. Beth could see the hot steam from the cocoa creating little water droplets along his masculine jaw. How sexy.

"Howie they'll think I'm crazy! But then again I might be." she said with a deep sigh. With desperate eyes she studied his face. "But you always know the right things to do. If you think I should tell the police I will."

"It can't hurt Beth." Reaching across the table he gently took her hand in his. A perfect fit.

Deputy McCormick sat at his desk quickly glancing over a recent report about a string of burglaries on the west end of town. Oh how I hate this job, he thought to himself.

Three months earlier he had been shot during a liquor store robbery on Marathon Avenue. He had been ready to head right back into his squad car but the Captain had said, "Kevin I'd be a damn fool to let a recently injured man back out onto the streets. You're on desk duty until further notice."

And that's where Kevin McCormick was on a beautiful autumn day. Glancing around the fairly empty police station, he couldn't help notice when the doors swung open and a beautiful petite blonde walk through looking around nervously. Escorting her was a man of Latin descent. They make a striking couple.

Walking over to greet the pair Kevin could see the apprehension in the woman's eyes.

"Good afternoon. I'm Deputy McCormick. Can I help you two with something?"

Slowly the girl raised her head. Looking first at her companion she then turned towards the Deputy.

"I think someone's following me."

"Following you?"

"Yes. I think someone has been..."

"Stalking you?"

"Yes. That's the word."

"Why don't you two follow me to my desk?" Deputy McCormick suggested nodding towards his desk piled sky high with papers.

When all three of the adults were finally seated the Deputy leaned towards the woman.

"Tell me everything that you've noticed since the moment you thought that you were being followed."

"Well..." Elizabeth said, wetting her lips. "It all started the night that a sandbag crashed into the piano inches from me."

For the next hour Elizabeth slowly began to elaborate on the small things that had been happening in the past two months. When she finally finished the Deputy leaned back and took a deep breath.

"It all seems highly suspicious and I will make a note of it. If there is anything else that happens please call us. The more evidence that we see first hand the better chance it is that we can catch this person if in fact there is someone."

"I'm not making these things up." Elizabeth said softly, tears welling up in her eyes. Quickly but reassuringly Howie squeezed her hand.

"I am definitely not accusing you of making things up. But the more stuff that we can see first hand and that we can get fingerprints from the better the chances are that someone can make sure you stay safe." Deputy McCormick said kindly, reaching over to pat her arm.

"Thank you." she said, standing up. Wrapping a strong arm around her shoulders Howie led her out of the building and towards his Corvette.

"You're going to be okay Beth. I'll tell you what. You'll move in with me."

Raising her head quickly she looked at him wide eyed.

"Move in with you?" she whispered. She couldn't hide her smile fast enough.

"You heard me." Howie said, leaning down to kiss her softly.

Everything will work out. There isn't room for unhappy endings.

Chapter Fourteen

Two weeks later Elizabeth finally finished moving the last of her things into Howie's beautiful house. She couldn't help but miss him. He had left with the other guys to do a small promotional stint in California. He wouldn't be back until the weekend.

Walking through the house she couldn't held but notice how intensely quiet it was. Even turning on the television didn't seem to help.

I need to get out.

Fifteen minutes later Elizabeth was at one of her favorite fast food restaurants, curled up in a booth with a romance novel and her dinner. For the first time since the festival she finally felt completely relaxed.

Maybe no one's following me. It was probably all just a figment of my imagination.

Feeling a new sense of rejuvenation, Beth headed back towards Howie's house with a new sense of calm. The sound of the surf was music to her ears as she pulled into the driveway, shutting off the ignition.

The door opened with a loud creak. Clicking on the lights Elizabeth scanned the room slowly. What she saw made her gasp.

For some reason her eyes had been drawn to the fish tank. Within it she saw the mutilated bodies of the rare tropical fish. They had all been decapitated. The blood smeared the walls of the tank. The water was tinted a light red.

What if the person who did that to them is still here?

With shaky hands, Beth grabbed the cell phone and backed up against the wall.

"Hello. Police Headquarters. How may I direct your call?" a warm voice said.

"I need to speak to...to..." Beth's mind was a blank. Oh god I can't remember the Deputy's last name.

Suddenly it hit her. "I need to talk to Deputy McCormick."

"One moment."

One moment? I could be dead by then!

"Hello, Deputy McCormick speaking."

"Deputy? This is Elizabeth Montgomery."

"Elizabeth Montgomery?"

"I...I was in about two weeks ago. I told you I thought someone was f...following with me." Beth whispered. She couldn't stop her voice from quivering.

"Oh yes. How are you doing Elizabeth?"

"Can you come over here? Someone's...been in the house. They still might be here."

Oh god, please don't let someone still be here.

"I'll be right there."

Chapter Fifteen

An hour later, Deputy McCormick stood beside Elizabeth writing down her statement. As soon as the Deputy had seen the severe mutilation of the fish he had brought in a detective to dust for fingerprints. A third police officer was going through the house for any more clues.

"And then I called you." Elizabeth said putting a fluttering hand up to her throat.

"Thank you Elizabeth. Just sit down. We're going to figure this out."

Walking over to the detective, Deputy McCormick looked again at the bloody tank. "Did you find any fingerprints Tony?"

"Nope. This thing's as clean as a whistle. I'm guessing that whoever did it was wearing a heavy duty pair of gloves. Not that I blame them. I wouldn't want fish blood on my hands either." Toni said putting his tools back into the kit.

"Sir!" the other policeman called. Without hesitation the Deputy followed the sound of the man's voice towards a bedroom. On the bed there was a knife jabbed into a pillow. Feathers were spread out all over the bed.

"What's that Johnson?" the Deputy said, inching closer. He saw the edge of a piece of paper being secured into place by the knife.

"It's a note sir."

Leaning over the Deputy gasped in surprised. Written in red, the same color as the mutilated fish's blood, were the words THE BOY IS MINE.

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" the Deputy said looking up. Walking back through the house, Deputy McCormick knelt down by Elizabeth.

"What did you find?" she asked weakly.

"Whoever killed the first left a note stabbed into one of the bedroom pillows. It said THE BOY IS MINE. Do you know what that means?"

"I...I don't have a clue." Elizabeth stammered, shaking her head.

"Your boyfriend. Before he started to date you did he have a bad breakup? Do you know of any ex-girlfriend of his that could be angry at you for dating him?"

"No. Howie hasn't had a girlfriend in over a year and a half. His last girlfriend's name was Claudia and I've met her. She's a sweet person."

"Well..." the Deputy paused. "I think that until your boyfriend comes home you should stay at a hotel. I'll have a policeman come by every hour just to make sure that everything’s alright around the premises. If you feel that something's not right don't hesitate to call." He handed her his home phone number.

"Thank you Deputy." Elizabeth said. He waited until she had packed a bag and then followed her safely in a squad car to make sure that she got into the hotel alright.

Elizabeth quickly received a room and rode the elevator up to the correct floor. The minute she walked into the room she exhaled the breath she had been holding in.

Oh Howie I need you so much right now.

* * *

The cool autumn air flew through Helen's hair as she cruised towards home. She was sure that her mother was still sitting up worrying about her like always. Reaching over she cranked up her radio to max. She couldn't resist singing along

You need to give it up
Had about enough
It's not hard to see
The boy is mine

I'm sorry that you
Seem to be confused
He belongs to me
The boy is mine

Chapter Sixteen

"Why didn't you tell me when I called Beth? I would have come back." Howie said, rushing into the room. Bursting into tears, Beth rushed towards him. What a sight for sore eyes.

"I went home and the policeman driving around the block told me that you had checked into here. They said there was a break-in. What happened?" he asked soothingly. He led her to the bed, sliding her down gently onto his lap.

Trying to control her hiccupy sobs, Beth managed to tell Howie what had happened. As she spoke he held her tighter and tighter.

"Dammit. What kind of sicko would do something like that?"

"I don't know. I just missed you so much. But I didn't want you to come rushing home. I was safe here." she whispered into his strong neck. Her breath against his skin made him tense slightly.

"I missed you so much Beth." he murmured, running his fingertips along her shoulders.

Slowly Beth looked up into his eyes. No words had to be spoken. With care, Howie slid her back on the bed, caressing her face with warm soft kisses. With slow and deliberate movements, Beth slowly undid the buttons of his shirt. The sight of his powerful chest was the last bit of reassurance that she needed to truly know that she was safe.

Carefully removing her shirt, Howie trailed his kisses down her stomach. The time away from her had been torturous for him. He had never felt this way about anyone else before. The guys had teased him all through the trip.

* * *

"Hey D., should we move track nine up to track three or just replace track nine altogether?" Kevin had asked, leaning over the mass of machines. Howie sat staring off into space, an angelic smile spread across his full lips.

"Kev, I don't think he's paying attention." Nick whispered leaning towards Kevin.

"Yo D.," AJ said coming up from behind him. He hit him lightly between the shoulder blades. It was only then that Howie realized where he was. His mind had been with Elizabeth. My Beth.

"Hmm?" he mumbled as he looked up into the faces of his four snickering band mates.

"Man, you have got it bad for this girl. You're over there about ready to make out with yourself." Brian said with a laugh.

"I'd hate to be that girl when you get back. With all that built up animal magnetism you're going to tear her into shreds." Nick remarked laughing.

"I'd hate for you to be that girl too Nick. You may be blonde but you definitely don't have the figure or the right equipment." Howie said with a smirk, taking an empty seat next to Kevin. "Now you were talking about tracks?"

* * *

Floating back to the present, Howie stared down at Elizabeth. His eyes shone with hunger as he studied her. Her fingertips trailed along his lips, her own puckering sensuously. Oh how I want her.

Their lovemaking that night was urgently passionate. When it was finally over, Elizabeth slowly studied his face until her eyes met his. He couldn't take his eyes off her.

"I love you Beth." he said, bringing her fingertips to his mouth. Tears sprang into her eyes.

"I love you too Howie."

"Everything's going to be okay. We're going to make beautiful music together forever." he whispered, leaning towards her. He met her lips with his in a tender kiss.

Forever sounds perfect to me.

Chapter Seventeen

Walking into the police station, Howie quickly spotted Deputy McCormick. The night before as they lay wrapped up in each other, Howie had decided that he wanted to personally talk to the Deputy.

Deputy McCormick was baffled. There were no fingerprints on the knife and the handwriting sample from the note was sent to a crime lab to be compared with writing samples from their database. Every lead had come up empty.

"Excuse me Deputy. May I have a word with you?"

Slowly, he raised his head to meet the gaze of Howard Dorough, Elizabeth's boyfriend.

"Of course you may. Please have a seat." the Deputy said, nodding towards the seat across from his desk. When Howie was seated, the Deputy continued. "What can I help you with?"

"I was wondering if you've found the person that broke in to my house. Elizabeth's still scared. I don't blame her. I'm getting worried myself."

"All items were taking to the crime lab. Unfortunately nothing's come in to give us any idea who could have done it Mr. Dorough. I still have a police officer driving around the neighborhood. We have looked around the house again. I believe it was a one time occurrence Mr. Dorough."

"I hope so. We'll be going back to the house tonight." Howie said.

"I'll alert my officers of that. If you do find anything else out of the ordinary please don't hesitate to call me. Your girlfriend has the number."

'Thank you Deputy McCormick." Howie said rising.

"Oh, before you leave Mr. Dorough..."

"Yes?"

"Can you think of anybody, like an ex-girlfriend, that could be holding a grudge?" the Deputy leaned forward, staring intently into his face.

"No. Elizabeth's been my first girlfriend in a long time and my last relationship ending mutually." Howie said, thinking about the moment when Claudia had told him that without commitment she wouldn't stay with him.

I wasn't ready for commitment then. But I am now.

"Alright. Thank you for stopping in Mr. Dorough." the Deputy said with a hint of disappointment in his voice.

There goes that theory.

* * *

God, she's got him wrapped around her little finger too.

Helen sat in the front row of the auditorium. The next festival was coming up in two months and students were competing for the twelve coveted spots open.

Professor Nordstrom, taking charge of the program, sat in a chair. His eyes were glued intently to Elizabeth as she gathered her courage to sing.

Closing her eyes, she focused on blocking out the thought of the others in the audience watching her. Images of Howie floated through her mind. He was kissing her slowly, running his hands along her slowly. Feeling her body relax, Elizabeth opened her mouth and began to sing with an inner strength and beauty.

You're the reason
Why I found a way
And you're the reason
Why I feel this way

And you're the reason
Why I have to say
I had to let you know
You're my everything
So many times I've been alone
I didn't know what to do
I don't know where I'd be
If I didn't have, didn't have you

You comfort me
Make me believe
Give me the strength I need
Since you came into my life
It's been so heavenly, heavenly

Elizabeth flew through the song with ease. Every word reminded her of Howie. She could almost feel his warm breath on her cheek.

Lingering on the last note, Elizabeth opened her eyes slowly. Practically everyone in the auditorium was on their feet clapping enthusiastically. Beth's heart couldn't help but swell with pride.

Elizabeth decided to stay for the rest of the auditions. She couldn't believe how well everyone did. People Beth had met in her classes suddenly seemed to transform and swell into a larger being once they stepped onto the stage. Her eyes were wide with awe.

I'll never make it.

Finally Professor Nordstrom stood up and glanced at his clipboard.

"Our last audition of the day will be by Helen Kendle."

Chapter Eighteen

With a confident stride, Helen made her way up to the stage. In a way she was glad that Elizabeth Montgomery had decided to stick around.

Now she will figure out she isn't as great as she thinks she is.

Opening her mouth, she started to sing as long as she could. Each word came out hot and angry.

I don't know why, why
But I'd love to see you cry
I don't know why, why
It just makes me feel alive

On and on she went, changing the lyrics with her own. Elizabeth couldn't help thinking how unusual the changed lyrics were. All through the song, Helen seemed to be staring only at her. Nervousness crept under Beth's skin.

She looks like she's angry at me. What could I have ever done to her?

With a satisfied smirk, Helen walked off the stage and right into her stepfather.

"That was...very nice Helen." Dean Williams said softly, staring at her. His eyebrows were raised in silent question.

"Well thank you. I was quite happy with my slight changes." she said, laughing softly. Stepping quickly around him she headed back into the changing area.

Shaking his head, the Dean quickly walked down the steps of the stage and directly up to Elizabeth.

"Elizabeth?" he asked.

"Dean Williams! Did you see the great performances?" Elizabeth said with a smile. She couldn't help but like the Dean.

"I did. You're a shoo-in. At least I think so." the Dean said, shooting a glance over at Professor Nordstrom.

"The results will be posted tomorrow." was his only response to the Dean's comment.

"Tomorrow can't come soon enough. Thank you again Dean for the wonderful comments. I hope this festival can go as well as our previous one." Beth said, giving him an angelic smile.

"You're welcome. Until tomorrow."

What the fuck?! How can this be? Those bastards. I'll kill every one of them.

With a new level of intense fury, Helen turned around and pushed her way through the crowd. Everyone was gathered around the list of people chosen to perform in the festival. Her name had not been on the list.

But Elizabeth Montgomery's name was. First she steals your Boy and now she's stealing your show. Are you going to let her get away with this?

"No." Helen whispered to herself. With squealing tires, Helen peeled out of the parking lot. She had to plan her revenge just right.

I know the perfect time.

Chapter Nineteen

Bursting through the doors of the house, Elizabeth screamed out. At any moment she felt that she would bust with excitement.

"What's wrong? What's the matter?" Howie said, running out of the bathroom. A white towel was draped loosely around his otherwise naked body. Sunlight through the open windows made the water droplets on his chest glisten.

"I got in! I got in!" Elizabeth screamed again, throwing herself at him. Wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, she covered his face with luscious kisses.

"You did?" Howie said, laughing over her exuberance. Without any effort, he picked her up and twirled her around. He watched happily as her head fell back. Her laughter filled the air, making everything feel lighter.

"Yes. I was number one on the list!" she said, staring into his eyes. He set her down gently only to pull her close. His lips brushed against hers. She could feel the water droplets from his body soaking in through her lightweight blouse.

"I want to celebrate." she whispered, nibbling on his ear. Without another word her fingers latched the edge of the towel, swiftly pulling it away from his waist. She could feel his body tense in anticipation.

"A celebration sounds perfect." he murmured, burying his face into her neck. She felt his teeth brush against her skin. Giggling softly, she couldn't help letting her hands explore his frame.

There's nothing more perfect.

Scooping Elizabeth up in his arms, Howie couldn't help but feel a rush. He had never been able to give all of himself to just one person before Beth.

She's the one, Howie.

"Yes." he whispered in response to his thought. Elizabeth laughed softly.

"Yes?" leaning up, she stroked his face before kissing it softly. Eagerly, he returned the kiss.

"Just preparing my voice for the screaming." Howie responded, giving her one of his traditional winks. A bright smile spread across her beautiful face.

Howie laid her down on the bed. He watched as she slowly did a strip tease from him. His tongue flicked across his lips at her slow movements. She could feel his impatience.

"Would you care to help?"

"What do you think?"

With a laugh Howie crawled next to her, slowly undoing the buttons. With caressing hands he slowly deposited her clothes on the floor.

When all of the clothes finally lay strewn along the floor, Howie took a moment to drink her in. Elizabeth's eyes filled with love. Pulling him closer, she instigated a string of kisses along his shoulders and down his stomach. She could feel the warmth from his body on her already flushed face.

"You make me whole, Elizabeth." he whispered to her before ravishing all of his love on her. It brought tears to her eyes.

He is truly God's gift to me.

Chapter Twenty

For Elizabeth, the two months until the festival flew by. Looking over at Howie she couldn't help but smile. Sensing her gaze, he took his eyes off the road long enough to give her a dazzling smile. Reaching over, he took her hand in his and gave it a squeeze.

"You're going to steal the show." he whispered lovingly, bringing her fingertips to his mouth to kiss softly.

"I just don't want to faint." she replied with a laugh.

"If you get scared just look at me. I'll be the lovesick puppy in the front row." he said, making barking noises. His eyes glittered impishly.

"God how I love you Howie Dorough." she said with a laugh.

"And I love you Elizabeth Montgomery."

Less than ten minutes later, Howie coasted the car into the parking lot.

Tonight's the night Dorough.

Opening her door, he watched as Elizabeth stepped out of the purple Corvette. Gazing up at him lovely, she snuggled closer to him as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

Elizabeth couldn't help but be optimistic. Besides the incident with the fish, she had stopped having the suspicion that she was being followed. Even though the officers had still not found the intruder, she was convinced that it was all in the past.

Stopping outside the front doors of the auditorium, Elizabeth turned to look at Howie. His gaze had never left her.

"I better get backstage." she said, nodding towards the performer’s entrance.

"Remember. Love sick puppy. First row." he laughed, leaning over to give her a passionate kiss. "Good luck baby. You're going to do great."

Kissing back, Elizabeth glanced up at him before headed towards the back entrance. "I love you." Blowing a kiss, she disappeared through the doors.

The minute she hit the backstage area, Beth felt like she was in the middle of a tornado. The other eleven performers were in frenzy. One screamed for makeup while another one screamed in horror over a broken zipper.

Trying to find a quiet spot, Elizabeth found an empty corner and began to get ready. She couldn't help but be full of anticipation.

Will there be as big of crowd as before?

Sneaking towards the curtain, she chanced a quick peek. She couldn't help but gasp. The room was at full capacity. Girls were lined up to get an autograph from Howie. The amused expression on her face brought a soft laugh from her throat.

"That's a big crowd isn't it?" a voice from behind Beth caused her to jump. It was Professor Nordstrom.

"Yes. I'm surprised. But excited." Elizabeth said, laughing again. Her hands were starting to shake.

"You'll do fine. You're definitely one of the most talented young ladies that I have seen. Good luck tonight." he said. Turning quickly, he began to mingle with the other performers.

Taking deep cleansing breaths, Elizabeth walked over to the performance list. With wide eyes she followed the names down until she found hers.

I'm last.

Chapter Twenty One

Helen watched with only a mild interest as the other performers came and went. Her sadistic smile never left her face.

She's last. They're saving the best for last. If they only knew.

As soon as the tenth performer came on, she slowly excused herself from the balcony of the auditorium. If she was ever going to do this correctly she would have to have at least a few minutes to set up.

It had taken two months worth of hard planning for her to get her plot down. There wouldn't be any room for error. Of course, she wasn't planning on making any errors.

Since the last disaster up in the rafters, they were now being carefully watched by the stage crews. She knew that she couldn't do anything there. However Helen had found an old abandoned room with a small window to the right of the balcony.

By the time the festival's over I will finally have Howard Dwayne Dorough. The boy will be mine.

"Deputy McCormick. This is Johnson over at the crime lab. I have some news for you on that break-in over at the Dorough place."

"Really?" the Deputy said surprised. "It's been months. What have you found?"

"It was purely by accident of course. My daughter is friends with the stepdaughter of Dean Williams. He's the Dean of Anderson Community College, where Elizabeth Montgomery is enrolled."

"Yes?"

"Well Helen, the Dean's stepdaughter, showed my daughter some lyrics that she had changed around. She told my daughter that she wasn't picked for the festival so she wouldn't need them after all the work she had put into them. My daughter asked if she could keep them and Helen agreed."

"What does this have to do with the break in?"

"The title of the song was THE BOY IS MINE. I took the handwritten sheet into the crime lab and had our hand writing expert compare the sheet with the note that was written on the pillow. It's an exact match sir."

"Holy shit Johnson. When is this festival? If this Helen's holding some type of grudge against Elizabeth then she may be plotting something tonight. I just talked to Elizabeth two weeks ago and she told me everything was fine and that she even got one of the coveted spots in a festival."

"From when my daughter tells me the festival's tonight sir."

"Fuck. Thank you Johnson."

Hanging up the phone quickly, Deputy McCormick grabbed his jacket. As soon as he slid into an empty squad car he turned on the transmitter.

"I need two backup officers to assist me. Anderson Community College Auditorium. We have a potentially dangerous suspect."

"And next we have a very talented young lady that will be singing a rendition of I Wanna Be With You. Please put your hands together for Elizabeth Montgomery!" Mr. Nordstrom cried, quickly exiting the stage.

It's now or never Beth.

Chapter Twenty Two

Willing her legs to move, Beth made her way onto the stage. The spotlight temporarily blinded her. Her heart was pounding.

Blinking fast, she studied the darkness until she found Howie sitting front row center. A huge smile never leaving his lips, she caught the movement of his mouth saying I Love You. That was all she needed to find her strength.

I try but I can't seem to get myself
To think of anything but you
Your breath on my face
Your warm gentle kiss, I taste the truth
I taste the truth
We know what I came here for
So I won`t ask for more

I wanna be with you
If only for a night
To be the one whose in your arms
Who holds you tight
I wanna be with you
There's nothing more to say
There's nothing else I want more than to feel this way
I wanna be with you
So I`ll hold you tonight
Like I would if you were mine
To hold forever more
And I`ll saver each touch that I wanted
So much to feel before (To feel before)
How beautiful it is
Just to be like this

The audience was spellbound. Howie leaned forward in his seat, his eyes glazed over with his pure devotion to her. She had never looked more appealing to him. Dressing in a long white dress with shimmering spaghetti straps, her blonde hair cascaded over her shoulders sexily. Her tanned skin made her look vibrant and alive.

She's an angel. My angel.

Suddenly, a noise from the back of the room broke through Howie's thoughts. Turning around, his eyes widened in surprise at the sight of Deputy McCormick and two other officers. Quickly an officer went to each side. Howie could see Deputy McCormick looking around.

Finally the Deputy's gaze settled on something. His jaw tensed. He quickly called an officer back over.

Following the Deputy's every movement, Howie looked up towards where he had been looking. What he saw made his stomach do flip flops. A gun, pointed directly towards the stage.

* * *

"Three..." Helen whispered to herself.

"Two..."

"One..."

The shot fired out of the gun with such intensity that she went spilling backwards out of her chair. Looking around quickly, she threw open the door and started to run.

"Not so fast." a voice said, blocking the stairway down. It was her only escape.

Turning around fast, Helen tried to make a feeble escape towards the small window.

I'll jump. I don't care. Howie's waiting for me.

Before she even reached the doorway back into the room, her wrist was caught harshly. The officer’s nails dug into her skin. Looking at him, she saw him place the cold metal of handcuffs around her wrist and quickly work it towards her other wrist. An intense madness spread across her face.

"The boy is mine." she told the officer happily as he led her outside towards a waiting police car.

The boy is mine.

Chapter Twenty Three

"Howie!" Elizabeth screamed, leaning over him. The events of the past seconds seemed to play over and over in her mind in slow motion.

In the middle of her very last line, she heard Howie. "Elizabeth!" he screamed. She saw him rushing towards her.

From the back of the room she heard a voice that she recognized as Deputy McCormick's. "Howie. No!" He began to race up towards the stage.

But it was too late.

Howie had jumped in front of her. Wrapping his arms around her, he had gently rolled her to the ground. Elizabeth had heard the shot and breathed a sigh of relief.

He saved me.

But, when she finally felt him roll off her she knew all was not well. He had not rolled himself off of her. Deputy McCormick had pulled him off her. Blood covered the back of her dress. Turning around she felt her head spin.

Blood was spilling out of his chest. His eyes were wide open with fear. They looked far away, distant.

The sound of the paramedics rushing towards the stage brought Beth out of the terrifying moments.

"Is he going to be alright?" she screamed at them. Without an answer, they lifted Howie onto a stretcher.

"You can ride with him." one of them finally mumbled.

He didn't wake up all the way to the hospital. The only thing Elizabeth could do was hold his hand and cry. Her teardrops fell onto his frozen face.

The minute the ambulance pulled up to the hospital, a group of doctors and nurses were waiting. They rushed him off without a look back at Elizabeth. She stood there, in her blood stained gown, clutching the ambulance door for support. Finally a kind faced nurse appeared.

"Let me help you into a chair." she suggested, taking Elizabeth's arm and guiding her towards the door.

* * *

The hours seemed to blend together. Elizabeth concentrated all of her thoughts on one tile on the linoleum floor. Her hands were clutched together so tightly that her knuckles began to turn white. The nurses urged her to get something to eat. All she could do was shake her head.

Finally a soft voice spoke. "Ms. Montgomery?"

Looking up through tear-filled eyes she realized it was a doctor. "Is he okay?" she whispered weakly.

"He's very critical. The bullet punctured a corner of his heart. We've tried to stop the bleeding but we aren't sure if it's worked or not. He's insisting that he see you immediately."

The thought of him insisting to see her straight out of surgery brought the welled up tears cascading down her pale face.

"Show me where he is." she said, mustering the strength to stand.

Without another word, the doctor led her down the hallway. Ignoring the bleakness of the walls and the overpowering smell of cleansers, she followed the doctor towards the ICU.

"Here it is." he said, nodding towards a private section.

Taking a deep breath, Elizabeth opened the door and walked slowly inside.

Chapter Twenty Four

The site of all of the machines going into his strong body brought a new round of sobs to her throat. But she could tell that he was watching her. Swallowing them down, she headed towards the bed.

"Beth..." he managed to croak out.

"Shhh, don't talk. It's okay." she whispered.

Taking his hand in hers she brought his fingers to her lips just like he had done to hers early that evening. It brought a soft smile to his face.

"Love...you." his eyes started to droop.

"It's okay Howie. I'm here for you. I love you too. So much."

A fugitive tear began it's descent down her face.

"Ma..." he started to say.

"Ma? You want me to call your mom?"

"No. Ma---" he took a deep breath. "Marry me."

The words threw her against the back of the chair. "You want me to marry you?" she responded in a shaky voice.

"Y--yes."

"Howie, of course I will. When you're all bet--"

"Now." he moaned softly.

"Now? I'll see what I can do."

The sound of his moan broke her heart. He was in so much pain.

"You can see him later. He needs his rest." the doctor said coming in.

"I'll be back later baby." she whispered, leaning down to kiss his cheek.

"Get m-minister." he whispered in response.

As soon as she walked out of the room, Elizabeth leaned heavily against the wall for support. Letting their conversation flow through her head, she finally got up enough strength to start walking. She headed straight for the hospital's chapel.

* * *

An hour later Elizabeth stood beside Howie clutching his hand. The minister, Bible in hand, stood at the foot of his hospital bed.

"I found the ring." the nurse said rushing in. Seeing the confused look on Elizabeth's face she replied. "He already had a ring in his pocket."

"Always come..." Howie said, wincing a bit as a rush of pain flowed through him. "prepared." with a weak smile he looked into Elizabeth's eyes. Even in so much pain they shone with the love he carried for her.

"Are we ready then?" the minister said softly.

"Yes." Elizabeth responded, leaning down to kiss Howie's forehead gently.

As the minister spoke words of love and togetherness, Elizabeth couldn't help but think of all the things they had been through in the short amount of time they had been together. She couldn't let him go. It was too soon. Sensing her worries, Howie squeezed her hand with the last bit of strength he had left.

"Do you Howard Dwayne Dorough take Elizabeth Ann Montgomery as your lawfully wedded wife?" the minister asked, glancing up at him.

"I do." he whispered. A peaceful smile spread across his face.

"And do you Elizabeth Ann Montgomery take Howard Dwayne Dorough as your lawfully wedded husband?"

"With all my heart. I do." she responded, laughing through her downpour of tears.

"Hand me...the ring." Howie whispered, looking up at the nurse. Without a word she placed the shimmering promise of love in his hand. Bringing it to his lips he took her hand in his and with shaky fingers slid it on. It fit perfectly.

"I don't have a ring for you." she whispered softly. Her legs trembled beneath her.

"All I need is your love and your melodies in my..." suddenly he gasped. Elizabeth's eyes widened in fear. "my heart."

"You may now kiss the bride." they heard the minister say.

Leaning down, she let her lips brush against his. They responded with love. His whole body felt light and weak.

I've got to hang on.

Suddenly the room began to spin. Elizabeth's happy tearful face seemed to blur as his eyelids began to droop.

I don't want to die. It's too soon. Please God.

"Howie!" Elizabeth screamed. He could barely hear his name. Sounds of her laughter and visions of her smile filled his thoughts. With one last gasping breath he murmured her name.

"My sweet Elizabeth angel. I love you."

He died with a smile on his lips. It was a smile that represented all the happy times in his life, including the short time that he had gotten to spend with the perfect woman that he had almost believed didn't exist.
Epilogue by evergreenwriter83
Epilogue

"Beth, honey? Are you alright?" Elizabeth's mother said, touching her shoulder. Slowly Elizabeth drifted back from her memories. Her shoulders shook as she held back a sob.

"Just...thinking." she whispered softly.

"Honey it's been almost ten months. There's nothing that you can do to bring him back. Justice has been served."

Helen Kendle had been sentenced to life in prison, including an extended stay within the prison’s mental institution. When Elizabeth had heard the verdict she hadn't felt any sense of closure. It won't bring him back. Nothing will.

"It doesn't hurt any less mom."

"I know honey, I know. I'll put these groceries away for you."

Walking into the living room, Elizabeth glanced at the photographs she had placed in silver plated frames. When her eyes fell on the picture of her and Dean Williams, she couldn't help but sigh softly. She still felt so bad for him.

After Helen had been arrested, the Dean had resigned from the college that he had devoted so much time and energy. In a letter he had sent to Elizabeth just two weeks ago, he had told her that he was now teaching in California and was very happy. He ended his letter with his extreme sympathies.

Suddenly the sound of a cry towards the back of the house caught Elizabeth's attention. Turning from the living room, she walked down the long corridor, opening the door to a sunny spacious room. The pale yellow walls reflected the light pouring in through a wide bay window.

"Shh, shh it's okay sweetheart." Beth whispered softly. Walking across the room quietly, she scooped up the small wailing infant and held him close to her.

Only two weeks after Howie's funeral she had received the news that she was pregnant. All through the pregnancy she had clung to the belief that Howie would be forever with her because of their little miracle.

He will live on through our baby.

The day Anthony Howard Dorough was born Elizabeth had wept with joy. He resembled Howie from the top of his head to his strong little feet. Whenever she looked into Anthony's eyes she could almost feel Howie spilling his love through them. They were the same dark brown that she went to sleep every night remembering.

"Hey little guy. Did you miss your mommy?" she said softly, sinking down into the rocking chair. Slowly he began to quiet down, staring up at her with wonderment in his eyes.

"Your daddy would have loved you. He's watching over both of us now."

As if on cue, a beautiful butterfly landed on the windowsill. Flapping its wings, it watched as Elizabeth began to sing softly, closing her eyes.

Yesterday is now a memory
Just a picture on the wall
Of the life I once shared with you
Someone who listened when I called
So many things I should have said to you
I had the chance and let it slip away

If I could fly up to heaven
Just to see you one more time
I'd fly all the way to heaven
Just to say that I love you

The last words you said to me (I love you)
Remain an echo in my mind
Never imagined that you'd leave so soon
I will miss you sweet Howie

Fluttering off the ledge, the butterfly began to rise towards Heaven carrying Elizabeth’s' message of love.. Gently laying Anthony down in his crib, Beth listened as a gust of wind flew through the open window. She could almost hear Howie's voice carried in it.

Always remember I love you.
