Chapter Twenty

For Elizabeth, the two months until the festival flew by. Looking over at Howie she couldn't help but smile. Sensing her gaze, he took his eyes off the road long enough to give her a dazzling smile. Reaching over, he took her hand in his and gave it a squeeze.

"You're going to steal the show." he whispered lovingly, bringing her fingertips to his mouth to kiss softly.

"I just don't want to faint." she replied with a laugh.

"If you get scared just look at me. I'll be the lovesick puppy in the front row." he said, making barking noises. His eyes glittered impishly.

"God how I love you Howie Dorough." she said with a laugh.

"And I love you Elizabeth Montgomery."

Less than ten minutes later, Howie coasted the car into the parking lot.

Tonight's the night Dorough.

Opening her door, he watched as Elizabeth stepped out of the purple Corvette. Gazing up at him lovely, she snuggled closer to him as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

Elizabeth couldn't help but be optimistic. Besides the incident with the fish, she had stopped having the suspicion that she was being followed. Even though the officers had still not found the intruder, she was convinced that it was all in the past.

Stopping outside the front doors of the auditorium, Elizabeth turned to look at Howie. His gaze had never left her.

"I better get backstage." she said, nodding towards the performer’s entrance.

"Remember. Love sick puppy. First row." he laughed, leaning over to give her a passionate kiss. "Good luck baby. You're going to do great."

Kissing back, Elizabeth glanced up at him before headed towards the back entrance. "I love you." Blowing a kiss, she disappeared through the doors.

The minute she hit the backstage area, Beth felt like she was in the middle of a tornado. The other eleven performers were in frenzy. One screamed for makeup while another one screamed in horror over a broken zipper.

Trying to find a quiet spot, Elizabeth found an empty corner and began to get ready. She couldn't help but be full of anticipation.

Will there be as big of crowd as before?

Sneaking towards the curtain, she chanced a quick peek. She couldn't help but gasp. The room was at full capacity. Girls were lined up to get an autograph from Howie. The amused expression on her face brought a soft laugh from her throat.

"That's a big crowd isn't it?" a voice from behind Beth caused her to jump. It was Professor Nordstrom.

"Yes. I'm surprised. But excited." Elizabeth said, laughing again. Her hands were starting to shake.

"You'll do fine. You're definitely one of the most talented young ladies that I have seen. Good luck tonight." he said. Turning quickly, he began to mingle with the other performers.

Taking deep cleansing breaths, Elizabeth walked over to the performance list. With wide eyes she followed the names down until she found hers.

I'm last.
