Chapter Six

Nobody nobody wants to be lonely
Nobody wants to cry
My body's longing to hold you
So bad it hurts inside

Time is precious and it's slipping away
And I've been waiting for you all of my life
Nobody wants to be lonely
So why don't you let me love you?

Their voices floated out the open window, over the balcony and towards the ocean to mix with the sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks. Over the past three months Elizabeth and Howie had been meeting at his house to practice on her voice. The music impacted them so hard that by the time it was all over their vocal muscles were sore and they were both dampened by perspiration.

But, one thing that they had come to realize was how beautiful their voices sounded together. Apart they were great. Together they were magical.

Howie couldn't help but gaze up at Beth. She was sitting on the piano gazing down at him singing as his fingers ran over the keys and his voice entwined with hers.

God, she's so beautiful.

Elizabeth looked down at Howie. Leaning over a little closer she inhaled the scent of his cologne. With every visit she seemed to become more and more attracted to him. Tonight the feelings were overpowering.

Beth, it's just the song.

Can you hear my voice
Do you hear my soul
It's a serenade
So your heart is finally whole

And suddenly you’re flying down the stairs
Into my arms baby

Slowly, Elizabeth reached out and touched his face. How soft it felt beneath her fingertips. Without consciousness her hands reached up and into his mess of brown curls.

How soft it feels.

Howie couldn't help but close his eyes. Her touch felt so good. He knew it was against the rules. But right now he didn't care. Without a pause the music continued and his voice came out of his mouth strong and clear.

Before I start going crazy
Run to me cause I'm dying

With agonizing slowness, Howie opened his eyes and gazed up into her face. Slowly taking his hands off the keys he placed his palms on the sides of her face. Leaning up he let his lips brush against hers. She eagerly responded with an equally soft kiss.

All of the pent up sexual tension finally released itself like water breaking through a flood gate. Without apprehension he kissed her again, this time with an increasing urgency. Her hands entangled themselves with even more intensity into his hair. With every passing second she inched closer to him until she was seated onto his lap. Her body brushed against the keys on the way down producing a melody of unrelated notes.

Howie refused to think of the implications. Of course he knew she was a student. It was against the rules. He wasn't exactly prepared for a relationship at the moment either nor was he what anyone would consider spontaneous.

I'm only going to live once.

Elizabeth broke free of their kiss. Slowly she trailed her lips down to his neck. Her mind swam. She barely felt his arms cradle her as he stood up and began to walk through the living room into his spacious bedroom. The last thing that passed through her mind was that there was no turning back.

Not that I really care.
