Chapter Ten

“Richardson,”

Kevin head snapped up at the sound of his name, or last name rather. That’s all everybody in the place was known by; their last name being barked out whenever they were wanted or being spoken to.

Slightly groggy, Kevin realized that he must have been woken up by the obnoxious, loud voice. God, he wished he knew what time it was, better yet, what day. He wanted out of the building; out of the cage that he was being kept it. Kevin felt that this was an inhumane punishment for anybody, even those who really had done something to land themselves there. Kevin felt that there had to be a better way to deal with criminals. Locking them up in a filthy, dark, dingy jail cell wasn’t the way to do it.

“Richardson,” the voice yelled again when Kevin failed to reply after the first calling.

“What,” Kevin called back, annoyed, standing up and advancing towards the gated door way.

The voice sounded like nails against a blackboard to his ears, only worse. More like knives and forks scraping back and forth on a piece of China dishwear. He winced at the noise, wanting the person to just go away. No such luck though. The footsteps grew closer and closer, pounding against the cold cement floor. Kevin let out a low growl, muttering a few choice things under his breath.

Finally, after a few long, agonizing minutes, or what seemed to be minutes, a prison guard came in to view, unclipping a ring full of dozens of keys from his pants. Fumbling around with them for a minute, he drew one specific one up, unlocking the door to the cell. Kevin looked at the man in confusion as the caged door was slid wide open. Kevin stood inside of the cell though, wondering what was going on. It sure would be nice if people told him anything around there.

“You’re free to go,” the guard informed Kevin.

“Huh?” Kevin asked, feeling like Nick must ninety-nine percent of the time. If his mind was as in tact as it normally was, he was sure that he would have a much easier time understanding what was going on. Plus, it didn’t help that he was still slightly disoriented from his sleep.

“The semen test came back…it doesn’t match up. You’re free to leave.”

Kevin couldn’t help but smirk as he walked out of the cell. His moment had come to tell these idiots what he thought as he breezed past the guard.

“I could have told you that a long time ago,” Kevin stated, not looking back as he led himself out of the place and in to the front lobby area, if that’s what you would call it. The guard followed closely behind him.

“Can never be too careful,” he replied simply, “I just hope that we find the real rapist.”

Kevin snorted. At the rate that these imbeciles were going, the real criminal would never be caught. In fact, he was probably half way around the country by now. He could only hope that he sick man would be caught in his act somewhere around the world, and that the policemen, wherever that was, were more intelligent than they were in that city.

“Did you honestly think that me or Nick really did it though?” Kevin asked incredulously, “Seriously now…we’re all harmless.”

The guard shrugged, and Kevin could tell that he didn’t know that they weren’t capable of rape. Rolling his eyes, Kevin pushed through the door, finally in the lobby. Sun poured through the large windows, causing Kevin to squint. It had been so long since he had seen the light of day, or had it?

“What day is it?” Kevin asked, spinning around to face the guard.

‘Thursday,”

Kevin’s eyes widened as he choked back his surprise. He’d been in the place for four days. He couldn’t believe that he had, in all reality, been so long, yet, it seemed to be much longer. Time had drug by at a snails pace, making it seem so much longer. Therefore, Kevin wasn’t sure if he was more shocked that it had only been four days, or that he was surprised that it had been as long as four days.

“Do you have a way back to your friends?”

“I’m going to have to call to be picked up,” Kevin informed the man, who just nodded in response. Kevin rolled his eyes. Even the prison guards were dense, “Which would be mighty helpful if I could have my cell phone back to make the call.”

Kevin’s voice dripped in sarcasm, which he hoped didn’t land him another few days in the place. It kind of hurt him to know that none of his friends had come to see him, but figured he deserved it after none of them had gone in for Nick. Plus, he decided, they might actually have a good excuse for it.

“Right, your fancy little cell phone,” the guard replied with a snort.

He walked up to a desk, which a young woman was behind, whispering something in her ear. The woman nodded her head, opening a drawer and bringing out his phone and handing it to the man. He then thanked her, returning to Kevin, extending his hand to return his phone. Kevin took it instantly.

“Normally, we don’t return personal belongings and such,”

“Gee, how kind of you,” Kevin replied shortly, walking out of the front doors. He considered telling the employees of the place the rest of what he thought of them and their tactics, but decided against it. He just wanted to leave. He could not wait to get a hold of his friends and leave the place behind. He hadn’t showered in four days, nor changed clothes. Kevin wanted to take a hot, steaming back with tons of soap and get in to something clean. He could swear that he smelled his own B.O., which completely disgusted him.

Flipping the phone open, Kevin decided to give his cousin’s phone a ring to inform him that he could leave. Dialing the number, Kevin brought the phone to his ear, listening to it ring six times before being answered.

“Yo, Kaos speakin’. Who dis?”

Kevin rolled his eyes, wondering how in the world Nick had gotten Brian’s cell in his hands.

“Nick, is Brian there?” Kevin asked shortly, not wanting to play games at that moment. He wasn’t in the mood and knew that if the blonde boy persisted with his annoying behavior, he’d blow up on him.

“Yo, Kev, that you bro?” Nick asked, and Kevin rolled his eyes at Nick trying to sound like a punk.

“Yes,” Kevin replied, becoming agitated, then asked again, “Is Brian there. I need to talk to him. It’s urgent.” That ought to hurry Nick up.

“Nah, he’s on the…hey…ouch, that was my head,” Nick cried out, then heard laughter as someone in the background yelled, “Give me my phone, retard.”

Kevin shook his head. Leave it to Nick to mess with things that weren’t his. Things obviously were out of hand without him around. Kevin could not wait to be back, but was afraid to see how disastrous things were. He half expected the bus to be trashed beyond recognition. He could hear the two men wrestling in the background, and then the phone dropping as there were shouts from Brian and laugher from Nick, and he could swear that A.J. was in the background laughing as well. Kevin yawned in boredom, wondering if he would become noticed again, or if the phone would remain on the ground of the bus for lord knew how long, unnoticed until the battery died and he was left without a way to reach them...and then remembered he had three other shots in the event of if that did happen.

“Hello,” came Brian’s voice after another minute or two. He sounded tired and like he was ready to murder the blonde child wannabe

“Hey Rok,”

“Kev,” Brian sounded startled, “Wow, um, wasn’t expecting you to call so soon. What’s up?”

“Not much,” Kevin said, “I was released today. Could you guys come and pick me up?”

“Yeah, yeah, sure,” Brian replied, “Where ya at?”

Kevin rolled his eyes again, something he was becoming quite skilled at from the past week.. Brian was obviously developing his best friends brain power. This was just what he needed,

“Same place Nicky was at.” Kevin informed him, “I’ll be waiting out front.”

“Oh, okay,” Brian said, “We’ll be right there.’

Kevin hung up the phone without another word. Sliding down the side of the building to sit and wait, a cold breeze blew against Kevin, but it felt good to him. Just from looking outside, with the sun shining bright, one would think that it would be warm. Upon stepping outside though, they were in for a big shock, litteraly.

Kevin closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling of being a freed man again. He couldn’t wait to see his friends again, and wondered how Amber was doing. He cringed then, wondering how much he had actually missed. In a matter of minutes, he would find out.

“The wheels on the bus go round and round,” Nick sang out.

Howie, Brian and A.J. all let out groans as Nick embellished in singing the childish song. It was his second time singing it, which was a major improvement from the ‘Song That Never Ends’ but it was still getting on their nerves.

“Nick,” A.J. warned.

“Round and round, round and round,” Nick continued, dancing a little in his sleep.

“Nickolas…” A.J. tried again through gritted teeth. The song was now stuck in his own head. He’d better sleep with one eye open tonight. A.J thought.

Howie and Brian were taking a different approach than A.J. was. Their plan was to ignore the blonde, hoping that he would quit after awhile of not being paid any attention to. So far, their plan was not working. It was better than overreacting like A.J. was, and they’d tried to tell him to just ignore the boy, but he refused. It was pretty sad though, when they couldn’t even go on a twenty-five minute ride without the youngest Boy becoming bored and restless.

“The wheels on the bus go round and round,”

“NICK,” A.J. yelled, “For the love of God, take your Ritalin and shut the hell up.”

Nick looked at A.J. innocently, sealing his lips shut. He suppressed a smile that he could feel coming, knowing that if he showed his signs of pleasure, it would only make the man even more angry. A.J. sighed, happy that Nick had had finally closed his mouth. Looking out the window, A.J, watched the scenery go by. All was completely silent, and A.J. was enjoying it, closing his eyes and taking it in. He was surprised that all of their commotion hadn’t awaken Amber, who was asleep again…either that, in the back, shaking in horror at how they were acting.

“All through the town,” Nick finished his song, coiling back when A.J’s head whipped around, glaring at him. He grinned at A.J, but the man wasn’t impressed.

“I swear, you have the attention span of a gnat,” A.J. told the blonde, “Freakin’ ADHD,” he then muttered under his breath.

Nick pouted, wounded by his comment, “I just wanted to make the trip go faster. It’s boring.”

“Nick, sweetie,” A.J. seethed, “It’s not that long of a ride that you have to bounce around and sing like a kindergartener.”

Nick slumped down in his seat, hearing Amber in the back moaning again. It had been two and a half days since he’d tried to help her and gotten harped at for it. He’d wanted to advance to the back of the bus each time he heard her, but was stopped. This time was no different.

“Just leave her alone, Nick,” Brian warned, “It’s her way of dealing with the pain.”

“It ain’t healthy,” Nick grumbled so that nobody could understand him.

A few minutes later, the bus rolled into the parking lot of the building that Nick was too familiar with. They all saw Kevin getting up off of the ground, running to the bus, which doors were open and awaking his arrival. Second after, Kevin was in the back with everyone, who were giving him hugs. They had missed him. After their big reunion, all five sat down. Kevin was glad to be back with his brothers. He even missed their bickering. If he’d only known what they had all done the whole time he had been gone, then he definitely wouldn’t be thinking that.

“How is Amber doing?” was the first thing he asked.

The Boys all looked to one another, wondering what they were going to tell Kevin. It wasn’t exactly the best of news that they could bring.

“Well, she was released from the hospital,” Brian began, as he watched Kevin’s eyebrows raise, “She’s in the back sleeping.”

“Nick just about scared her shitless though,” A.J said.

“I did not,” Nick whined

Kevin shook his head, “Tell me about it later, kay?” he whispered to Nick, taking the blonde by surprise, then he said to everyone, “What…does she know that she was raped yet?”

The four all nodded their heads quickly. There was no denying that she did know. Kevin heard her moaning in the back suddenly, giving them questioning looks.

“Nightmares,” Howie explained.

Kevin nodded understandingly. He wasn’t much in the talking mood at the moment. All he wanted was to relax comfortably.

“So, how did you handle prison?” Brian asked his cousin with a light chuckle.

“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Kevin answered, still ashamed that he’d been in the place. That was over with now, another chapter of his life gone. Now would begin a new one of trying to help Amber. He had missed a lot over the last few days and was in for a big surprise.

(A/N- In the next chapter, i'll start getting more in to Amber's feelings...i realize I haven't done much of that, so, it will be added starting in 11 now! Thanks for reading!!!)
