“Mr. Lewis, you have been convicted of four counts of vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated, reckless endangerment, and possession of an illegal substance. Is there anything you would like to say to Mrs. Walters?” the judge asked

He turned and looked at her with a stone face. “No.”

Tanya squeezed C’s hand so hard, her nails broke the skin, causing him to let out a stifled cry of pain. Next thing he knew, she was on her feet.

“No? You killed my husband and my three children and you have nothing to say to me? How about sorry for ruining your life, or sorry your precious babies are in the ground next to the man you loved with all your heart.......sorry you will never see them again because I am an idiot. I was drunk, high, talking on my phone, all while driving and not watching where I was going.”
“Tanya, sit down.” C said gently pulling her arm down
“No. I want him to hear what I have to say. I had no say in what happened to my family, but damn if I’m letting him get the last word. You are a lousy excuse for a man. You took the lives of four of the most important people in the world to me. I will never get to see my boys go to school for the first time, teach them to ride a bike, go to college, get married, have babies of their own....” she broke off sinking down next to C, sobbing uncontrollably into his chest

He stood there, unaffected by her words, then turned back to the judge.

“Mr. Lewis, I hereby sentence you to life imprisonment with no parol for the crimes you’ve committed. You are also required to pay Mrs. Walters $1.5 million in damages. Officer, please remove him from the courtroom.” the judge finished

Tanya watched as the man in shackles exited the room with an officer on each side. He looked over his shoulder and gave her an evil grin. If it wouldn’t have been for C holding her down, she would have threw herself on him and beat him until she couldn’t raise her fist anymore. His lawyer approached her to make arrangements for her damages, but she brushed him off.

“I don’t want that bastard’s money. I got what I wanted. He’s going to live the rest of his life in prison, remembering every day why he’s there.” she said walking away

She collected her things and began walking out of the courtroom. As soon as she got outside, flashbulbs went off and microphones were thrust in her face. Questions came at her from every angle. She couldn’t take it. Nervously she looked around for C, but didn’t see him.

“C?” she yelled
“Right here.”he said coming up next to her and guiding her through the crowd by the arm
“Mrs. Walters, are you happy with the verdict?” one asked
“It’s over, leave me alone.” she said trying to get away

They finally made their was to her car, and C helped her in.

“Are you sure you can drive?” he asked
“Yes. The sooner I get away from this circus, the better. I’ll call you when I get home so you know I made it. Thank you so much for doing this for me. I know you didn’t have to, but I really appreciate it.” she said

he closed the door and watched her drive off. He made his way back to his hotel, and sat watching tv. The news was on, and there they were, on the screen. Twenty minutes later, his cell was ringing.

“C, can I please come to your hotel? There are a dozen reporters camped out on my lawn, and I don’t want to deal with it.” she said
“Sure.” he said giving her the hotel name and room number

When she got there, she looked exhausted. The didn’t talk for awhile, until C broke the silence.

“So, did you get any sort of closure today?” he asked
“Not really the kind I wanted. He could have at least said sorry. Life will go on, he’ll wrought, I’ll keep breathing. Do you have anything to drink?” she asked
“Water or soda.” he said
“How about soda with some rum?” she said
“You shouldn’t be drinking. You’re unhappy, don’t make it worse.”
“I know. I just want to relax. I’ve been on edge for so long, I just want to relax.” she repeated
“Why don’t you go take a hot bath, I’ll get us some dinner, then you can crash on my bed. I’ll take the couch.” he said
“Why are you so good to me, C?” she asked
“Chris. My name is Chris. I’m good to you, because it makes me forget about my problems. You keep me occupied.” he said standing to run her a bath

He called room service for a pizza and found her some of his clothes to put on. After an hour, he lightly tapped on the door making sure she was okay. When he got no answer, he pushed the door open and found her sitting in the cold water with her hands buried in her face. He covered his eyes with a hand and spoke.

“Tanya, please come out of there. You’re going to get the chills. That water has got to be freezing by now.” he said

She didn’t answer him, just kept sobbing. Getting frustrated, he grabbed a robe, walked over, lifted her out and wrapped it around her, all the while trying not to see to much.

“Dry off and put these on. They’ll be a bit big, but it’s all I have.” he said motioning to the plaid pajama pants and t shirt.

He walked out of the room, just as the pizza arrived. A few minutes later, she came out, trying to tie the pants so they’d stay up. They ate in silence, and then got ready for bed. Chris stretched out on the couch, and tried not to laugh as she got up and tripped on the pants, causing them to pool around her ankles.

“It’s not funny. I have no underwear on, and these damn things won’t stay up. Is there a reason you take the string out of them?” she said

He got up and tossed her a pair of boxers and got back on the couch. She examined them a minute before putting them on.

“Don’t worry, they’re clean. Actually, they’re new. I just bought them. No Chris germs.” he said

The next morning, she was up before him. He found her sitting at the table, reading the paper with a confused look on her face.

“What’s wrong?” he asked
“Your famous? How did I not know that?” she said
“What are you talking about?” he asked

She turned the paper around to show him. There was a picture of him coming out of the courthouse with her. The caption explained who he was, but not how she knew him.
