He stayed at Katie’s grave until he calmed himself down. He wasn’t sure he wanted to face Casey. He sat on the grass in front of her grave speaking quietly to Katie.

He yawned and knew it was time to go home. He stood up and brushed the grass off of his pants and made his way back to his car.

He arrived back at his house around 15 minutes later. He opened the front door and saw Casey in the living room. He took a deep breath as he walked through the living room and to the stairs. He let out a grateful sigh when Casey didn’t try to stop him. He went upstairs and knocked on Abby’s door.

“Hey Nick.”

“Hey Abby. I’m back so I’ll keep an ear out for my brother.” She gave him back the baby monitor. “Thanks for listening for him.”

“Oh, no problem.”

Nick smiled briefly at Abby and walked into his room. He quickly stripped himself of his clothes except for his boxers and climbed into his bed.

The next morning, he woke up and threw on a pair of jeans and a shirt and went downstairs to enter his kitchen. When he got to the kitchen he saw Abby and Casey eating breakfast. He went to the pantry and grabbed a package of Pop-Tarts. He took a glass, poured himself something to drink and left the room with his glass and breakfast.

He stayed in his room all day, only leaving to take care of Kanden and to get food.

Later, there was a knock on his door. Nick fell back on his bed and grabbed his pillow. He placed it over his face and screamed, hoping the pillow muffled the sound. Don’t these people know that he doesn’t want to be bothered? He haphazardly threw his pillow to the side and got up. He went to the door. He opened it enough for him to see who was outside. He opened the door further and allowed Brent to come in.

“We’re watching a movie downstairs. Join us.”

“I’d rather not.” Nick went to close the door.

Brent blocked it. “You’ve been up here all day.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“Argh, you’re so frustrating.”

“Fine.”

Nick closed his door behind him and followed Brent downstairs. Brent immediately joined Abby on the couch. They were taking up the whole couch. That only left the loveseat, next to Casey. He sat down on the floor. Brent starred at the back of Nick’s head in confusion.

Throughout the movie Nick was very uncomfortable. He could see that Brent and Abby were making out on the couch. He glanced at Casey. He looked away with a sad sigh. He’d give anything to be able to sit next to Casey. However, he knew it would hurt too much, and that Casey wouldn’t want him there. He tried to turn his attention to the movie while trying to lessen his discomfort. He kept glancing back to Casey. He couldn’t understand why Casey couldn’t love him back.

He couldn’t take it any more. He couldn’t take Brent and Abby cuddling on the couch. He couldn’t take watching the romantic comedy they had picked out. And most of all, he couldn’t take being in the same room as Casey knowing that she doesn’t want anything to do with him. He didn’t make it to the end of the movie. He got up and left the room.

Brent stood up and started to follow him. “Brent come here.”

He turned toward his girlfriend. “But something’s bothering him.”

“Brent, you can’t always fix everything for him.”

“But I’m his best friend.”

“You’re also smothering him. Let him work through whatever it is on his own. If he wants you’re help, he’ll ask for it. Now come here.”

“But Abby…”

“Don’t. Let him be. Finish the movie.”

Brent unwillingly obliged. He walked back to the couch he was sharing with Abby. He kept looking upstairs. He was no longer paying attention to the movie or Abby.

Abby got off the couch and stood in front of him. When he barely acknowledged her presence and kept glancing upstairs, she got fed up. She smacked him.

He grabbed his stinging cheek. “What was that for?”

“You’re paying more attention to the empty hallway then you are to me.”

“He’s upset. I should be with him.”

“You should let him breath.” Abby returned to the couch. Brent tried his best not to look upstairs for the remainder of the movie.

At the end of the movie, Casey noticed that she was hungry. “Hey, do you want to order a pizza?”

They looked at each other then nodded. “Sure.”

“Great.” Casey sprung from her seat and went to the phone to order the pie.

Upstairs, Nick was sitting at the desk in his room. He had his pencil and sketch book. He was in deep concentration while he was drawing. He wasn’t really looking at what he was drawing. It was almost like he was in a trance.

He finished his drawing. There was a knock on the door that pulled him out of his trance. He looked at the picture and saw Katie. Although it wasn’t an image of Katie how he remembered her. She seemed to be glowing with an angelic aura of light surrounding her.

He smiled, and then whispered. “My guardian angel.” He looked up at the door when someone knocked again. “It’s open.”

Brent opened the door and stuck his head in. “Pizza’s here.”

Nick didn’t know what to do. He was hungry, but he didn’t want to face Casey or Brent and Abby’s constant PDA’s. “I’m not hungry Brent.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah. I might eat some later.”

“Ok Nick.” Brent left the room to go eat.

He sat back at his desk and looked at the picture. He put the finishing touches on the picture and placed it gently on his desk. He looked around the room blankly. He needed to find a way to preserve the picture. He spotted his frame. 1 half had a picture of Katie, the other half was empty. He folded the sheet carefully and fitted it in the frame. Then he smiled. He lied back on his bed starring at the picture of Katie and his drawing. He stayed in his own world until his stomach reminded him how hungry he was.

He went downstairs and entered the kitchen. He was expecting the kitchen to be empty; he stopped short when he saw his three room mates. He continued to walk as if he didn’t stop.

“Ok, you. Stop right there.”

“What?”

“What’s wrong?”

“What do you mean what’s wrong?”

“You stopped short when you saw us in here.”

“I just wasn’t expecting you in here.”

“Where were you headed?”

“Outside. Is that not allowed.” Nick’s stomach betrayed him and growled.

“You’re hungry.”

“No I’m not.”

“Nick, I just heard your stomach growl.”

“Well you heard wrong because I think I would know if I was hungry.”

Nick started to continue in his direction to his yard. “Nick.”

He turned around and his eyes met the gazes of his three room mates. He saw concern in the eyes of his best friend and his best friend’s girlfriend. He only briefly met Casey’s gaze. He didn’t want to know what he saw in her eyes. After all, she was the one who just recently broke his heart.

He turned away from his supposed destination and left the kitchen in a flurry. “What the hell is wrong with you people?”
