Lately I've been noticing
I say the same things he used to say
And I even find myself acting the very same way
I tap my fingers on the table
To the rhythm of my soul
And I jingle the car keys
When I'm ready to go
When I look in the mirror
He's right there in my eyes
Starin' back at me and I realize

Kevin Richardson stood in the front entrance of his home in Hollywood Hills, California. He was living there this month, as the Boys had concerts and awards shows to do there and it was easier than flying from Kentucky to California every day.

He was waiting on Kristin, his wife, to come downstairs. They were on their way out to a movie premiere - War Of The Worlds, starring Tom Cruise. And so far, they were running a bit late.

"Kris! Hurry up!" Kevin called up the stairs, from his spot in the front hallway.

"Hold on!" Kristin called back. "I'm fixing my hair!"

Kevin rolled his eyes, as he tapped his fingers upon the table that was under the mirror in the hall. He was growing impatient, though he tried not to be. He just hated to be late for anything - including movie premieres.

His mind began to wander, to everything he had to do this month. Sound checks, concerts, music awards, charity events, and a few other things as well. He sighed a few minutes later though when he realized they were more behind schedule than he'd originally thought.

"Kris! C'mon!" Kevin yelled. "We're gonna be late!"

"Kevin Scott, give me a moment to grab my purse," Kristin stated, coming downstairs finally, and heading into the kitchen to fetch her purse.

Kevin jingled his keys, anxious to get going. "I'm waiting, I'm waiting."

"Well, you're not doing a very good job of it, now are you?" Kristin teased. "You know I'm a lady, and ladies need time to prepare themselves for an outing."

Kevin shook his head, smiling some. "Yeah, yeah. I know, I know. And may I say, you look mighty lovely, Kris."

Kristin smirked. "You're just trying to butter me up."

"Is it working?" Kevin asked, wriggling his bushy eyebrows.

Kristin laughed. "Maybe. Just maybe."

Kevin chuckled, as he waited for her to get her shoes and jacket on. It was during this time that he glanced in the mirror, and had to do a double take. Had he just seen an image of his father in his reflection? He looked closer, and realized it was himself he'd seen.

"Wow," he thought to himself. "I look like Dad."

He smiled wistfully, as he thought about how he'd some of his father's habits - tapping his fingers on tables, jingling his car keys, and being on time - all the time, if possible.

"Kev?" Kristin said softly. "You okay?"

Kevin shook himself out of his daze, and flashed her an award winning smile.

"Yeah, I'm fine," he replied, taking hold of her hand and bringing her close for a kiss. "Go on out and start the car, I'll lock up here."

Kristin nodded, smiling, and hurried on out to get the car going.

Kevin glanced in the mirror once more, shaking his head, unable to believe just how much he looked like his father.

"Well, I'll be damned," he thought. "And everybody says I look more like Mom."

He chuckled to himself, as he locked up and headed on out to the car. Once strapped safely inside, he drove off to the movie premiere, his lovely bride at his side.

Dedication: To Ashee - BOOM!!!!!
The older I get
The more I can see
How much he loved my mother and my brothers and me
And he did the best that he could
And I only hope when I have my own family
That everyday I see
A little more of my father in me

Kevin stood watching wistfully as two young boys, and a young girl played football with their father at the park. He'd gone to the park to take a walk, and was now standing there watching the happy family play. Just watching them made him think of all the times him and his brothers had played football with their father.

"Man, I miss those days," he sighed to himself. "Everything was perfect then. Everybody was here and having fun."

He smirked, as he watched the father scoop the youngest boy up and flip him over his shoulder playfully.

"I wish I could go back to those days," he thought to himself. "Carefree and fun. And Dad was there to make everything okay."

Flashback.....

Kevin was sitting outside on the front step of their home. He was waiting for his Dad to get home from work, so that they could go toss the football around as promised.

He sat there for quite a while, listening to the wind rustle in the trees. He sniffed, taking in a whiff of the delicious home-baked cookies his Mom was baking in the kitchen - she'd opened the window, seeing as it was such a nice day out.

The door behind him opened then. "Would you like a cookie, Boo?"

Kevin turned around and grinned. "Please Mommy," he replied.

Ann smiled down at her youngest son - she knew that before too long, her little six-year-old baby would be a grown man and have babies of his own. She was trying to enjoy her sons' childhoods while they lasted.

"Well, it's a good thing I brought some out with me then, isn't it?" Ann said, sitting down next to him. She'd left Tim to watch the cookies - he was to call her when the timer beeped.

Kevin crawled into his mother's lap, and eagerly took the cookies she produced from her apron pocket.

"Thank-you, Mommy." Kevin sat there in her lap, happily eating his cookies. "When will Daddy be home?"

"Soon, Baby," Ann smiled, smoothing his hair down some. "He'll be home soon, and then you boys will be off to the park to play."

Kevin grinned. As a treat for behaving nicely all week, they were driving to the park to play - which was a little ways away.

"Mom! It's beepin'!" Tim called from inside the house.

"I'm coming, Honey!" Ann called back. She kissed Kevin's head, then gently slid him off her lap. "Don't wander far if you decide to go play, okay Boo?"

"Okay, Mommy," Kevin nodded, munching away on his last cookie.

Ann headed back inside, leaving Kevin to sit on the front step all by himself once more.

Kevin had just finished licking his fingers and wiping his hands on his blue jeans, when his father's car finally pulled up into the drive-way.

"DADDY!!!!" Kevin yelled excitedly, jumping up and running for the car.

Gerald smiled as he spotted his youngest son running towards him at full speed - a huge grin upon his small face.

Kevin squealed as his father scooped him up and swung him about playfully. "We goin' now?"

Gerald laughed. "Just let me go change and say hello to your mother, son."

Kevin hugged his father tight, as he was carried inside. Once inside, he was set upon the floor.

"Go get your ball," Gerald told him, giving his bottom a love pat to get him going.

Kevin giggled and ran off to get his things, calling out to his brothers as he did so.

"TIM!!! JERALD!!! DADDY'S HOME!!!"

Gerald shook his head, still amused, as he entered the kitchen and greeted his lovely wife.

Ann smiled warmly at him. "He's been sitting out on the front step since he got home from school at lunch."

"That explains the toy cars I had to step over," Gerald chuckled.

Ann nodded. "I'm glad they only had a half day of school. And I'm really glad you got off work early. Why, it's only two o'clock."

Gerald grinned. "I know. Told them I had to get home to play ball with my sons."

"Go change," Ann told him. "Don't make them wait anymore."

Gerald kissed her softly, then left the room, a smile upon his face.

~~~~~
A short while later Gerald and the boys were at the much anticipated park. There was a large playground and plenty of open space to play football or soccer in. There was also a basketball court and a baseball diamond.
The boys quickly piled out of the car, once at the park - all waiting by the car obediently, before heading across the parking lot.
Gerald smiled as he watched his sons each grab something to carry, and hurry off across the parking lot - all but Kevin, who still stood by his father's side waiting.
"Let's go," Gerald told the small boy, taking hold of his little hand.
Kevin giggled, and trotted alongside his father, carrying the football.
Once they'd set their things down in shady location, the boys quickly took off to play, while Gerald sat on a nearby bench to watch for now.
Kevin was thrilled his brothers were letting him play pirates with them! It wasn't often they let him play too, because he was the baby and they didn't want to end up in trouble for hurting him.
"C'mon Kevin!" Jerald called. "You gotta swab the decks!"
"Okay!" Kevin exclaimed enthusiastically. He didn't care nor realize they'd given him the crap job.
Tim laughed, then climbed up onto the monkey bars to be the look-out.
The game went on for a while, all being fine, until they got a bit rough. The older two were shoving, and Kevin ended up flying down the slide head first, landing on his hands at the bottom, and doing a complete flip landing on his backside - hard.
Gerald jumped up and ran for his son, as Kevin let loose with a loud wail.
Tim and Jerald stood at the top of the slide looking sheepish. They hadn't intended for their little brother to get hurt.
Gerald scooped Kevin up, after checking him over quickly. "Let's go get your hands cleaned up, okay?"
Kevin nodded through his tears, burying his face into his father as he cried.
Gerald carried Kevin into the nearby bathroom, and sat him gently upon the counter. He deftly cleaned his little hands up with soap and water, then kissed his head and stood him upon the floor.
"Anything else hurt?" He asked, concerned.
Kevin rubbed his bottom, wincing slightly.
"Here, let Daddy see," Gerald told him. He checked his son's bottom, and shook his head. "Well, it might bruise - but you'll live."
Kevin turned around after his pants had been pulled back up, and gave his Dad the biggest hug ever!
"You feel well enough to play some ball? Or would you rather go home?" Gerald queried.
"Ball!" Kevin exclaimed, his tear-stained face lighting up.
Gerald chuckled. "Alright, son. Let's go get the football."
Kevin grabbed his father's hand and dragged him out of the bathroom. "TIM!!! JERALD!!! COME PLAY!!!"
The older boys came running over. "Play what?" They wanted to know.
Kevin just smiled as he ran over to their things and picked up his precious football.
"Alright!" Jerald exclaimed.
"Yeah!" Tim whooped.
Gerald smirked, as he watched the boys cheer. He didn't get to toss the ball around with them as often as he'd like, but when he did, they always had a great time.
As Kevin came over, Jerald met him half way. "You're okay, right?"
Kevin nodded. "Uh-huh."
"We didn't mean to shove yah down the slide, Buddy," Jerald told him, ruffling his hair.
Kevin giggled and ducked away. "I know."
"Guys! C'mon!" Tim called. "Let's play already!"
The four of them began to toss the football around, having a grand old time, until it was too dark to play anymore. It was also just about Kevin's bedtime.
End of Flashback....
Kevin blinked back the tears that threatened to fall. Boy, did he ever miss his Dad. He'd never forget that day at the park either - it was one of his earliest memories, and definitely one of his most favourites.
He watched, smiling as he saw the three kids tackling their father to the ground, full of laughter.
"That'll be me some day," Kevin thought quietly to himself. "Some day soon, I hope."
He glanced one last time at the happy family, then turned and headed for his car to go home - feeling better about things then he had before.
Flashback:
Eleven-year-old Kevin sat on a log, down by the lake on their property, with his fishing pole in hand. He had decided to come and fish, instead of doing his chores. He wanted to catch his family some dinner, so that his father would be proud. If his brothers could do it, then why couldn’t he, he reasoned. He whistled to himself, as he tipped his hat forward in order to shade his eyes from the sweltering sun that was already beginning to beat down on him.
“Dad’s gonna be so amazed when he sees all the fish I’m gonna catch!” Kevin thought, proud of his idea. “I’ll even help Momma fix ‘em up for dinner, if she asks me too!”
Kevin leaned back against the tree that was behind the log he was currently sitting on. He loved to sit here by the lake, even if he wasn’t there to fish – it was the most relaxing spot of all to him, and he never wanted for that to change.
He especially loved this spot, when his father or brothers joined him, but mostly his father. The two of them would sit there, just like he was now, and talk about everything and anything. Even if they just sat there in silence, which they did do at times, it was a wonderful welcomed silence, as just knowing his father was there with him meant the world to him. He loved spending time with his father, and hoped to one day be just like him!
He squirmed a little bit, as he got comfortable, and smiled happily to himself.
“They’re gonna be so surprised!” Kevin mused, as he placed his folded hands into his lap and closed his eyes. He’d set his fishing pole up so that it wouldn’t fall over, and that the bell on it would chime if he caught anything. He could be a light sleeper when he wanted to be.
Meanwhile, back at the Richardson household, Ann Richardson was becoming worried, as her youngest son hadn’t come in from doing his chores. He usually came in soon as he was done, for a quick snack and a snuggle, and today he’d yet to come in.
“Kevin?” Ann called out, as she set foot outside the house. She’d decided to go and search for her baby – for all she knew, he could’ve got held up in the barn, or maybe he’d decided to take his horse for a walk around the pen.
She began to grow worried, when she searched everywhere he should’ve been, and then some. Her worries increased when she found his horse still in the stables and not out in the gated area grazing like it should’ve been.
“Kevin?!?” Ann shouted somewhat. “Kevin, where are you?”
“What’s wrong?” A voice asked from behind her then.
Ann whirled about in surprise, greatly relieved to see her husband standing there before her.
“I can’t find Kevin,” she informed him. “He left the house earlier to do his chores, but none of them seem to have gotten done. You don’t think he’s off hurt somewhere, do you?”
Gerald frowned upon hearing this, as each of their boys knew just how important it was for them to get their chores done before going off to do anything else.
“Are you sure he’s not around here somewhere?” He double-checked.
“I’ve looked everywhere, Gerald!” Ann exclaimed, worry etched in her voice. “I can’t find my baby!”
“I’ll look for him,” Gerald assured her, placing calming hands on her shoulders. “You just go on inside and wait for him there, should he decide to come back from wherever he’s gone off too.”
“You don’t think he’s hurt, do you?” Ann fretted.
“No, I’m sure he’s fine,” Gerald replied. “At least, until I get a hold of him. Then that young man of ours may not be able to sit for a while.”
“Gerald, please, don’t do anything rash or be too hard on him. We don’t even know what he’s done or where he is,” Ann pleaded. “Just find him and bring him home.”
Gerald nodded. “Don’t you worry any, Ann. I’ll find our boy and bring him home to you safely.”
“Now go,” Ann told him, gently shoving him towards the door. “He shouldn’t be without water for too long in this heat.”
Gerald gave his wife a quick kiss, then went off to find his youngest son who seemed to have suddenly up and disappeared on them. Though he was sure if was just a case of not wanting to do his chores, he was going to search high and low until he found the boy. For all he knew, the boy could actually have a logical explanation for his disappearance, but that was still no reason to be worry his mother!
Back at the lake, Kevin had no idea that he’d caused his mother to worry, nor the fact that his father was now looking for him, and none too amused at the moment. No, Kevin had no idea what was going on back at the house, as he was currently busy trying to reel in a fish he seemed to have caught.
“C’mon! C’mon!” Kevin muttered, reeling his line in as he tried to steady himself so he wouldn’t fall into the lake. The last thing he needed was to go home soaking wet, and have to explain the embarrassing story of how he’d fallen in while trying to catch a fish. Nope, he would not let that happen! Not if he could help it!
Suddenly, his fishing pole jerked out of his hands and flew out into the lake a ways, as the fish had decided to take his rod captive and swim off with it. His eyes went wide, as he realized he’d just lost his father’s prized fishing pole – he’d taken it instead of his own, as his father’s had the better bell. The pole had been passed down from one generation to the next, and was due to go to his oldest brother, Jerald, sometime soon.
“Aw, man! Dad’s gonna kill me!” Kevin wailed, glad no one was there to hear or see him at the moment.
He sighed heavily, as he began to take his shoes and socks off, deciding he didn’t want for them to be wet. Soon enough, he’d stripped down to his boxers, and quickly dove on into the lake, and swam on out to try and find his father’s fishing pole. He knew he couldn’t go home without it! His father would be so mad – and worst of all, disappointed.
He searched and searched, diving under the water when he believed to have spotted the prized fishing pole – but, had no such luck in finding it. He noticed it was getting later in the day, and if he didn’t find it soon he’d not only have to go home without the dinner he’d wanted to catch, but also without the pole he had foolishly lost. It was that moment of panic that caused him to dive down deeper than he had before, as he was now out way over his head – the lake dropped off after a bit, hence why him and his brothers were to never swim alone. During his dive down to the bottom, he got snagged on a piece of driftwood and could not get himself loose – no matter how hard he struggled!
Gerald had just reached his favourite fishing spot at the lake, just in time to see his youngest son out in the water, way over his head. He opened his mouth to call the boy, and watched in silent and angry surprise when his son suddenly dove down into the water. Taking quick note of exactly where his son had gone under, he watched for a few moments to see if the boy would resurface. When Kevin didn’t come back up, he felt fear rise within him as he hurriedly yanked his boots and jeans off, and ran for the water, his shirt flying off in the process. He swam out quick as he could to where he’d last seen his youngest boy, and dove down in hopes of finding him.
Kevin had just begun to panic, when suddenly, out of nowhere, his father appeared. In that moment, he didn’t give a damn about the blasted fishing rod! He wanted up and out of the water, and he wanted up and out of it now!
Gerald struggled to get his son free and after a few more moments, had finally and thankfully succeeded in the task. He quickly swam them both to the surface and listened with great relief as Kevin gasped for air.
Kevin remained silent as his father swam them back to shore, where their clothes were strewn about – both had dove on in, in a panic – but both for much different reasons.
Gerald hauled his son out once they reached shore. He was furious with the boy!
“Just what do you think you’re doing swimming alone, Young Man?” He demanded angrily.
Kevin shrunk upon hearing his father’s tone. “I-I was looking for what I-I lost, Sir.”
“And just what did you lose that was so dagnab important you just had to risk your life over it?”
“I—it was your fishing pole, Dad,” Kevin spoke softly, his eyes brimming with tears. How he’d so not wanted to admit that.
Gerald’s jaw set then, as he eyed his youngest son warily. “I can always get another one,” he stated firmly. “But I can not replace you.”
“But Dad - !” Kevin attempted to protest.
Gerald said nothing, as he turned the young boy around and delivered a single, hearty smack to his soaked boxer-clad bottom. “Get on home to your mother, and up to your room!”
Kevin yelped as even more tears welled up, and some even managed to leak on out. He turned, not caring about his clothes lying by the pond, and hightailed it on back to the house as he’d been told.
Gerald shook his head, as he gathered up their things, following along behind his son soon as he had everything.
Ann was sitting out on the front porch, awaiting the arrival of either her son, or her husband, or both. It was while she sat there, that she spotted him. Her little boy with dark black hair and green eyes, came flying through the yard at top speed, tears streaming down his small face. She feared the worst and immediately stood in order to catch her boxer-clad baby.
“Kevin!” She gasped, opening her arms for her soaking and dripping wet son.
“Momma!” Kevin wailed, sounding much younger than eleven as he flung himself into her arms and cried. He’d been given quite the scare when he’d become stuck underneath the water – if it hadn’t’ve been for his dad, he probably would’ve drown!
Ann held him close and smoothed his hair back, rocking her little boy. “Shh….You’re okay,” she soothed, as she spotted her husband coming up to the house. She gave him a questioning Look, in which he only shook his head in response.
Gerald allowed Kevin a couple minutes with his mother, as the boy had to have been scared out of his mind when he became trapped below the water’s surface. But, when he felt the time was right, he gave the order they both dreaded.
“Kevin, go on up to your room and change,” Gerald told him. “I’ll be up in a minute.”
Kevin went to protest, as he was still wrapped safely in his mother’s embrace, but moved quickly when his father gave him a stern look. “Yes, Sir.”
Gerald watched as the boy reluctantly removed himself from his mother’s arms, and headed on up to his room, to go and change out of his wet skivvies.
“Do you have too?” Ann asked, once their son was out of ear shot.
“Ann, he almost drown out there,” Gerald stated, as he pointed out the fact he too was only in his boxers. “The boy foolishly went swimming in that lake by himself, in order to find my fishing pole! And who knows why he wasn’t even out there fishing instead of doing his chores!”
“Don’t you raise your voice to me, Gerald,” Ann replied. “I know you’re upset and all, but do give the boy a chance to explain.”
“Don’t I always give them a chance to explain?”
Ann nodded. “But you’ve never come this close to losing Kevin before. We both know just how much he looks up to you.”
Gerald smiled a little then. “Yeah, he’s a good boy. Just makes mistakes sometimes like the rest of us.”
Ann kissed her husband’s cheek. “Go on. Get out of those wet things, and I’ll go make up a snack for our little defiant fish.”
Gerald chuckled and kissed his wife before heading on inside to change himself it’d do him no good to remain in his wet boxers, neither would it do his son any good either.
Kevin was in his room, lying on his bed crying, when he suddenly heard his father’s footsteps on the stairs. His whole body stiffened, but relaxed a little when he realized his father had gone on down the hall. He hiccupped and buried his face back into his pillow to cry.
“I’m so stupid!” He berated himself. “I should’ve known better! I coulda died out there, an’ I didn’t even think of that ‘till it was too late! If Dad hadn’t’ve….”
His voice hitched as he started to cry once more, burying his face further into the pillow than before. He was so busy crying and berating himself that he didn’t even hear his father come into the room.
Gerald watched silently for a moment, noting the boy hadn’t even bothered to change out of his wet boxers – which would have to be done if they were to sit and talk about all that had happened.
Kevin startled upon hearing a throat clear, and quickly turned to sit up, brushing away his tears angrily.
“Son, you need to get out of those boxers before you catch a chill,” Gerald stated factually.
Kevin nodded, as he stood, heading for his dresser. “Not like I’ll be needing any, anyway,” he mumbled bitterly.
Gerald shook his head and waited for his son to change, as he sat down upon the twin bed that was in the room. “Now, son, come here.”
Kevin cautiously went and stood before his Dad, stiffening slightly as his father picked him up and set him upon his lap.
“Now, do you care to explain to me just why you skipped out on your chores, and were out by the lake alone?” Gerald asked. “And why didn’t you inform one of us as to where you were going? Do you have any idea as to just how worried your mother was?”
Kevin stared down at his feet silently for a few moments, feeling incredibly foolish. He couldn’t believe how much trouble he’d gotten himself into just because he’d wanted to surprise his family with a fish dinner.
“I wanted to catch some fish, for Momma,” he admitted finally, still staring down at his feet. “I wanted to bring dinner home for her, like you do all the time. But I didn’t catch nothin’ but trouble, an’ ended up losing your favourite fishing pole.”
Gerald gave a soft sigh. It figured his son was trying to d o something for his mother – though, it seemed lately every time he tried to do something special for her, he’d wind himself up in some sort of trouble.
“Son, it was very nice of you to want to catch dinner for your mother,” Gerald began. “But you still need to tell one of us where you’re going, so that we don’t worry. If I hadn’t’ve noticed my fishing pole was gone, I’d never have known to check the lake – and if I hadn’t’ve gotten there when I did, who knows what could’ve happened to you.”
“I’m sorry,” Kevin whispered, his eyes brimming with tears once more. “I-I didn’t mean to lose your pole.”
“Kevin Scott, look at me right now, Young Man,” Gerald insisted firmly. Soon as he’d eye contact with his son, he continued on. “I am not worried about the fishing pole! What I’m worried about, is that you’re more upset over losing the pole than the fact you could’ve drowned out there today. I don’t care if you lost the pole – I can always get another off my mother. What I care about, is the fact that I was there in time to save you. I care about you, son. I can bear to lose the pole, but I can not bear to lose you!”
“I’m sorry, Dad,” Kevin said softly, as he looked his father in the eye. “I didn’t mean to make you and Momma worry none. An’ I didn’t mean to be so stupid and go in the water alone.”
“Son, you’re anything but stupid,” Gerald assured him. “What you did was stupid, but you are not stupid.”
“Yes, Sir,” Kevin replied, looking away then as he knew what was next.
“Well, let’s get this over with, shall we?”
“Can’t we just pretend we did?” Kevin asked hopefully, his face falling downcast as he watched his father shake his head no.
Gerald gently eased his youngest son over his lap, and pulled his boxers down in back. “Son, this hurts me much more than it hurts you. But I only do this because I love you, and don’t want to ever again come as close to losing you as I did today.”
“Yes, Sir,” Kevin mumbled from his upside down position.
Gerald then placed the first of many spanks to come, down upon the small bared bottom looking up at him.
Once his spanking was over and done with, Kevin sat upon his father’s lap once more; his face buried into his father’s chest as he cried his shameful tears.
Gerald rocked his son and hugged him close. “Shh….you’ll live.” He assured the boy. “Now, for not doing your chores, you’re grounded for the rest of the week, understand?”
“Y-Yes, Sir,” Kevin choked out. “I’m sorry….”
“Shh….I know you are,” Gerald said with a small smile. “Now, how about we go on downstairs and see what your mother has waiting for us in the kitchen?”
“Kay,” Kevin agreed readily, whining a bit when his Dad lift him up into his arms as he stood. Though, to be honest, he didn’t mind it so much, even if it did make him feel like a little, little kid again.
Gerald chuckled as he carried his son on downstairs to the kitchen, where his beautiful wife had a small snack of cheese and crackers awaiting them. It would’ve been cookies and milk, but it was close to dinnertime.
Kevin was anxiously pacing his living room, worried about Kristin. She had been sick recently and had gone to the doctors for a check-up. He hoped everything was okay, as he wasn’t sure he would be able to handle it, if there was something wrong. He figured it was probably just the flu or something simple like that, as what else could possibly make you throw up?
“Please God, let everything be okay,” he prayed softly, as he continued to wear a hole in the floor. “I still need her, more than you could ever know.”
He glanced at the clock nervously, wondering what was taking her so long to get home. He would have gone with her, but he’d had previous plans and couldn’t take her to the appointment. He about jumped out of his skin, when he heard the front door open and close; his name being called a moment later.
“Kevin?”
“In here!” Kevin called back, as he turned to go to the front hall.
Kristin met him in the living room entrance. “How long have you been home?”
“A half hour or so,” Kevin replied, before demanding, “What did the doctor say? Is it the flu?”
“It’s not the flu,” Kristin answered casually.
“It’s worse than the flu?” Kevin fretted, his eyes showing his worry.
Kristin gave a soft laugh as she squeezed his hands. “Kevin, relax. It’s nothing bad, I promise.”
“Then what’s been making you sick?” Kevin wanted to know, not figuring the obvious. “You’ve been throwing up for over a week now!”
“Remember when you said you were quitting the Backstreet Boys because you wanted to start a family?”
Kevin nodded, raising his eyebrows. She couldn’t be….she wasn’t…
“Is now a good time to start one?” Kristin asked with a smile.
“You’re…you’re…” Kevin trailed off, his eyes wide.
“Pregnant,” Kristin finished for him. “Yes. We’re having a baby!”
Kevin embraced her tightly as tears of joy began streaming down his face. He was so happy! He’d been wanting a family of his own for so long and now it was finally happening!
“I love you Kristin Kay Richardson,” he murmured before kissing her passionately.
“I love you Kevin Scott Richardson,” Kristin laughed after the kiss, as he picked her up and spun her around. “But don’t go making the baby dizzy.”
Kevin laughed as he set her down and kissed her once more. He couldn’t wait to tell everyone else the news! His mother would be thrilled!
~~~~~

Today was the day. Today he was going to become a father. Kristin had gone into labor earlier and he was a panicked mess. He had run outside to the car with her bags and started driving down the driveway, until he had remember she wasn’t even in the car yet! He had quickly backed up and helped her into the car, apologizing profusely, as she gave a small laugh and shook her head at him. Granted, she had been between contractions at that moment – now she was screaming and sweating as she tried to push their little bundle of joy out of her body.

“GET HIM OUT!” Kristin screamed, as she pushed hard. “GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT!”

“Breathe,” Kevin reminded her, as she squeezed his hand with a grip he’d not been aware she had. “Focus on the sonogram and breathe.”

“THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT RICHARDSON!” Kristin screamed, pushing once more, as Kevin cringed slightly.

“We have a head!” The doctor announced. “You’re doing great Kristin. We just need another big push or two and your baby will be with us.”

Kristin let out a primal growl as she gave another long, hard push, falling back onto the pillows afterward.

“We have a boy!” The doctor exclaimed, as he carefully caught the baby. He held him up to show the new parents. “We’ll get him cleaned up and to you quickly.”

Kevin felt himself start to cry, when he heard it was a boy. He would have been happy either way, but there was just something extra special about having a son. Part of him had hoped for a boy, as he wanted to do all the things with his son that he had done with his father. True he could have done most of the stuff with a girl too, and he would not have loved her any less, but his heart had secretly been set on a son.

Kristin breathed a sigh of relief, as she squeezed Kevin’s hand. “We did it, Daddy.”

“You did all the work,” Kevin replied as he leaned down to kiss her amidst tears. “I love you so much.”

“Make way for baby Richardson,” the nurse stated, as she handed the child over to its mother. “Do you have a name for him yet?”

Kevin nodded, though his gaze remained on the tiny baby in his wife’s arms. “Mason. His name is Mason.”

The nurse nodded, as she walked away to take care of her other responsibilities.

Kristin held their son for a little while, counting his fingers and toes, before glancing at her husband with a small smile.

“Would you like to hold him Daddy?” Kristin offered, knowing how badly her husband must want to hold their newborn child.

Kevin nodded wordlessly as he carefully took the baby from Kristin and held him close. He gazed down at him lovingly, knowing that the little boy in his arms had already stolen his heart for good. He briefly wondered if this is what his father had felt like each time he had held him and his brother for the very first time. “Hello Mason….I’m your….your Daddy….”br />
