Chapter 31
I’ve been cooped up in this hospital over a month and was finally able to go home. Alex was helping me pack up my things when Kevin, Brian and Howie walked in. “Hey guys.” I said with a smile on my face. “Hey Ally.” Brian said as he picked up one of the bags. They all had this distant look on there faces when they entered. “What? What’s wrong?” I asked turning towards them. “It’s your mother.” Kevin finally said. “What’s wrong with her?” I asked looking at the guys confused. “You didn’t tell her?” Kevin asked looking over at Alex. “No. I thought you would have told her.” Alex said. “AJ she’s your girlfriend you should have told her.” Kevin replied. “Yeah but Maddy is you daughter.” Alex throws back.” “Jesus Christ, will someone just tell me what’s going on!!” I said getting upset with them.

The room when silent as no one wanted to say anything. I looked over at Kevin who was now standing at the window wrapped in his thoughts. Brian had left the room and Allison was sitting on the bed. I hadn’t stopped staring at the back of Kevin’s head when some one cleared there throat. Turning my head I noticed that Howie had moved towards Allison. Then he sat down next to her and took her hand. “Ally… About you mom.” He started. “D… what… what’s wrong with her?” “Your mom…” Then he sighed. “She’s…” “What?” She asked looking at him. Then she looked over at Kevin who was now walking over to her. “Baby, your mom’s got cancer.” Kevin finally said. “What?!” She asked in pure shock.

I didn’t know what to say. I looked up at Kevin then to Howie. “I’m sorry.” Kevin replied. I looked over at Alex and he had moved farther away from me. “Did you all know this?” I asked glancing at Alex as all he did was nod his head. “How long have you known?” “Little over a month.” Howie said. I didn’t know what to think. I’m loosing my mom. I couldn’t believe this was happening. Pulling back from Howie I pulled my knees up to my chest and started to cry. “Ally?” Kevin started. “Why couldn’t any of you tell me?” “Because I thought best that you get better before we did.” Kevin said. I grew silent again. I really didn’t want to believe that my mom had cancer. When I looked up I saw Brian. “Ally, I’m the one who should have told you a long time a go.” He said. “Why?” “Because I’ve known… awhile. Like…” He paused. “Almost a year.” I sat up and glared at him before speaking. “How long has she known?” I asked as Brian walked over to me. “She’s known about it almost fifteen years now.”

Fifteen years. My mom’s been sick for fifteen years. That would mean she had this cancer after my dad died. “Ally, what are you thinking?” Alex asked placing his hand on my arm. I looked up at him as my tears ran down my cheeks. Brian and Howie moved out of the way to let Alex sit next to me. “Baby, what is it?” “I think… I think I understand now why my father went back.” I said looking into Alex’s eyes. Alex lifted up my hands in his and placed them to his lips. “You don’t think your dad knew about your mom’s cancer do you?” “I’m starting to believe it.” “Oh. Your mom gave me this.” Brian said handing me an envelope. “What is this?” I asked looking up at him as I took the envelope. “She didn’t say. She just told me to hold onto it and give it to you when the time was right. Now just seemed like the best time.” Brian said. I opened the envelope and pulled out the letters.

My Dearest Allison,
I know that you’re upset that I left like I did. I wanted to tell you the truth on the reason why I left. I went back because of your mother and I were having problems. It had nothing to do with you. I will always love you, never forget that.
Baby don’t get me wrong, I will always love your mother but ever since Trevor died things just weren’t the same between us. Then when your mom was diagnosed with cancer I got scared and I did the only thing. I ran. I didn’t want to believe that my wife was ill. I just… I know it was wrong and to leave on your special day. I should have been there for you and I wasn’t. I’m sorry. You have every right to be mad at me. Your dad is just a big ass. I did leave but I didn’t have to come here, but I did. I just wish there was something that I could do.

I wish I could be there for you. To see you on your first date. In your gown for prom. Graduation. To meet the man you fall in love with. I would have also loved to see my little girl get married so I could give her away. We know I can’t. But your daddy can always dream right? When the time comes could you tell your mother that I love her and I haven’t stopped thinking about her? I love you too.

I miss you baby girl. So stay strong for you mother. We’ll see each other again someday.

Love you always,
Daddy

Folding up the letter I had broken down and just cried. “Ah Papá. Yo le pierdo tanto” (Translated: Oh Daddy. I miss you so much) Looking up at the four men sitting in my room I saw there worried looks. “Who’s it from?” Alex asked. Looking back at him I really broke down as he pulled me into his arms. “It’s a letter from my daddy.” I whispered. “What did he say?” Kevin asked. Without pulling away from Alex I reached over and handed Kevin the letter for him to read. Pulling back slightly I looked up at Alex. “I wanna go home.” I whispered. “What about the other letter?” Alex asked as he rubbed my back gently. I just shock my head ‘no’. “I can’t right now.” “It’s okay. We can read it later.” “Thank you.”
